Our Tuesday night LAST group is growing. We have 20+ members.
We will be featured in the upcoming Post Carbon Newsletter. Here is how it will read:
Local Action for a Sustainable Tomorrow (LAST) started in September of this year. Our current projects focus on uniting Clallam County (Washington) by bringing together groups on the Olympic Peninsula that are interested in sustainability and then to establish the steps necessary to prepare for peak oil and climate change. Right now we’re in the process of identifying local groups to partner with, and finding individuals who are already supporting sustainable practices in our community. Among our many ideas for change, we’re also looking into potentially helping to create a sustainability center at Peninsula College or similar facility, and working with local city and county leaders to take action on these issues. Being a newly formed group, there’s lots of work ahead but we’re glad to be part of a growing network of people working towards implementing the relocalization strategy and building strong and healthy communities. Our guiding principles include:
Communication: Raise public awareness of the environmental, economic and social challenges facing Clallam County; build a compelling case for action to meet these challenges.
Education: Provide detailed information and facilitate the development of skills, knowledge and resources that will be needed within a sustainable local community.
Community Development: Strengthen ties between community and governmental groups in order to create or enhance local infrastructure to address the challenges we face.
Demonstration: Take individual and collective action, in whatever ways we each can, to serve as an example of sustainable local community citizenship.
We invite people to take part in the group and come to our meetings which take place every Tuesday night. For more information and details about upcoming film screenings, meetings and guest speaker events, visit us online at sequim.relocalize.net
We supplied a photo of Lori Schneider, David Haight, & Cathy Haight as well. Photo was taken by Kurt Schneider.
Lori assembled a LAST Action Planner. It is at http://relocalize.net/last_action_planner
We have identified focus areas and we will apply our guiding principles to them thru this matrix.
Several of our members are planning to take the Sustainable Farming course that will be offered in Sequim this winter by WA State Extension. Since it will be on Tues nights, we will have to change our meeting nights to another night.
Several of our group attended a webinar yesterday on 3rd party solar financing. This is primarily for business at this time.
Proceedings from the Webinar will be available at www.nwcurrent.com/webconferences by the end of this week.
If you have problems downloading the recording, please email editor@nwcurrent.com.
Laura Dubois, newly elected Sequim council member and our water resources member will be attending a meeting a John Wayne Marina this Thurs 4-7PM regarding the Dungeness watershed. I think Laura & I will be attending as well.
We just got a new logo designed by one of our members, David Haight, who is a graphic artist. It looks great. You will be seeing it around.
Big green letters>> LAST with "Local Action for a" above and "Sustainable Tomorrow" below. There will be a sine wave type curve running thru it that indicates stability(sustainability). We will use it in ads and window stickers for sustainable businesses.
We are still working on a list of energy saving ideas to present to Green Sequim & the city of Sequim.
