A Victory Garden Begins in Friendly Area Neighborhood, Eugene!
[to see more on the progress of this single-afternoon project, see photo attachments toward bottom]
By Sundog

On a cold and occasionally damp Saturday, March 29th, friends of Amy Raven and Doug Black assembled at their 2786 Almaden St. home to create a ‘Peak-oil-and-climate-change-busting’ 14’ x 18’ Victory Garden! The gifted group withstood cold rain, a hailstorm, bouts of occasional thirst and hunger, and some very muddy shoes, but the Victory of a final Victory Garden was accomplished!

The project began with the eager stripping and, eventually…flipping of the permaculturally-placed turf(thank you Denise for your resolute words!), with resulting upside-down worms! Over the next 5 ½ hours, ensuing sheet composting, buckets and wheelbarrows of fertile topsoil dumping, and meticulous placement of retaining-wall bricks resulted in the final Victory of the new garden.

The Victory Garden will accomplish different objectives:

*Lessening the need for an increasingly expensive,(freeway)transported, polluting, climate-changing food source

*Increasing the immediate nutritional value for the grower’s diets

*Increasing the healthy soulful, wholistic connection between the grower and their giving food

*Strengthening daily exercise and health

and...

*Connecting neighbors with neighbors to create healthy community-based friendships while gardening, and increasing the social value of the city, exponentially and functionally better than any iPod or TV program

Permaculture Guild Soire' Monday the 14th

Join us for the Guild's Second Monday of the Month Soire'

April 14 at 745 W 10th. Call Bryna at 345 1586 for more info

The evening is casual, fun, educational and participatory.

Bring a friend.  Feel free to bring a munchie.

6:30 -  Mix and Mingle. Chat, meet new people, connect,,,,,,,

7:00 -  Informal presentation-  This month, Jan Spencer will describe some recent developments within the City of Eugene Neighborhoods Program.  There is growing interest in a city wide Neighborhood Summit- a coming together of many neighborhood activists. [There was a very successful summit 15 months ago.] There is also early agreement this Summit [perhaps taking place in early 2009] should include a strong environmental/eco lifestyle component.  Nothing has been planned but the Summit idea is to be discussed among the 22 neighborhhood associations this month with the Summit already on the agenda of the next Neighborhood Leaders Council meeting, April 22 at the Sloat Room in the Atrium Building.

So what?  The Summit, with city staff and resources to help, could be an unprecedented boost to green living and culture in Eugene. Jan has been advocating a  green summit in a variety of ways over the past month, speaking with many well placed people and has clear thoughts about how those of us with interests in eco living, permaculture, re-localizing,,,,, can participate, help make the summit happen and insure its a groundbreaking event. To read a more complete explanation about the summit and its possibilities, go to  http://www.suburbanpermaculture.org/N%27hood%20Summit.htm

7:30 -  Show and Tell - An opportunity to share good news.  What are people doing around town to promote eco logical culture.  Share what you know. Share what you are doing. Hear what others are up to.  Could bring about more postive eco action.

8:00 -  Circular Think Tank - Looking for advice, need some info?  This part of the Soire' is about sharing useful information about putting our green living ideas into practice.  Could be about gardening, construction, design, philosophy, or anything else related to eco living.

April 22nd, NLC meeting

Jan:

Great on the April 22nd happening! We need traction big time on peak/change, while NAs debate over how to beautify their parks, instead of planning for impending wholesale lifestyle changes. Do you have good contacts within the current NLC? I've gotten close to nowhere starting out with the local rep & committee. Do they have a master list for announcing 4/16 Lerch/Heinberg with? Or just email addresses through the city's NLC page?

Re: April 22nd, NLC meeting

hi doug

here is what i suggest for the nlc

mobilize as many relo pals to go to the nlc meeting

they wont have much time to talk, maybe all they can say is a city summit with a lot of green is a great idea

the nlc normaly has only 2 or 3 "guests"  if 10, 15, 20 people show up to support a green summit, it will make an impression.  time to speak will be minimal, but just a few words about going green will be important

suggest local food, mutual support networks, if you go, mention you just created a victory garden [good!], say there is a lot of building momentum for localizing, maybe a few factoids, lots of people would participate in n'hood associations if they went more green-- but the fact is, they CAN go more green if green people show up and make it happen,,,

n'hood orgs have enormous poetential, people just need to go and make it happen

also, go to the may 14 amazon n'hood association general meeting- it will be about growing food in the n'hood and taking care of more needs closer to home.  the info will not be groundbreaking but its coming from the n'hood organization- not the permaculture guild

a LOT of people there will send a message, the other n'hood orgs know amazon is having this program, and when 75- 100 people show up, they will say- "yikes!  this is for real"

also, the may 17 eat here now- urban food production event at the methodist church will be great

check the pc guild website for more info

then, on may 24, i am having perma jam II,  more info on the pc guild website

and then, for people to actually start going to their n'hood association meetings and push for green action

at the pc guild soire' april 14, i will explain the emerging n'hood opportunities, more info on the guild website

send me the info about the heinberg thing and i will pass it on

thanks

jan
