Anyone have experience with cover crops?

I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with cover crops in this area. There's some soil on the south end of the house that could use some help/enrichment. Things I've considered: crimson clover, buckwheat, or vetch and rye. Anyone tried any of these or perhaps others?

We haven't yet planted a cover crop but continue to read and hear about them. We want to take all the grass out of our front yard by next year and we have thought that planting a cover crop could enrich the soil from which the grass has been sucking all the nutrients out for the last 50 some years. Any way...we are interested in knowing about them too and how/what to do.

I really like the idea of planting a nitrogen-fixing cover crop which you can then kill by mowing. You can lay the mowings down and plant right in it - the mowings act as mulch for veggie starts.

Green manures are exciting, too. I think we can be planting buckwheat now to prep for cool crops. It matures quickly then you turn it back into the soil before planting in fall.
