Whilst I was on the road, I happened to indulge in a bit of TV. Boy am I glad we got rid of the darn thing.
The most amusing thing I saw was a report on a news station stating that the Opposition had moved to censure Kevin Rudd over petrol prices...
OK, I'm no fan of the whole FuelWatch scheme. I think that it is pretty much a token gesture to the Australian public implying that their government is doing something about the price of petrol. But to censure Kevin 07 about the prices? 1 of 2 things that come to my mind:
1) the Opposition is completely unaware of what is really going on with fuel prices (this is a worry); or
2) the Opposition believes that the Australian public is nearly completely unaware of what is really going on with fuel prices, and is trying to acquire political capital by exploiting this pain in the side of the Aussie Battla' (this is a bigger worry).
My sense is that it is the latter...the Opposition DID have the foresight to put the LPG for automobiles rebate scheme into place. A small but significant part of the mitigation process that our country needs to deflect Peak Oil.
So, what to do? We've got to keep the pressure on the media, the Battla' public, and on the Government. We need to get this Peak Oil thing into the mainstream. I believe that we're nearly there, much like climate change was in 2005. It is a worry that the Government refuses to acknowledge the Peak Oil phenomenon, because it provides the framework for the diffusion of this political bomb. It also provides the knowledge foundation for the diffusion of the social bomb now lit.
We also need to develop our edible gardens. This is one of the best things a Battla' can do.
Peace in our communities.

I found this great explanation of oil prices and supply (and why politicians cant do anything!) and lots of discussion. Its worth a read.

If we get 50% of our oil out of the ground here we might be better off than many places!
