As one part of our effort to renovate an existing ranch house to be more sustainable and energy efficient, Cheyenne and I have ordered wood salvaged from tobacco and horse barns to be made into wood flooring. Several people have asked to see the process and we are having a public workshop this Saturday at 10:30 a.m. to show two things: laying the floor and sanding/finishing the floor. The people from Lexington who provided the floor will conduct the workshop. There is no charge. No need to RSVP, just come if you are interested!
The address is 199 Adams Street in Berea. Adams Street runs between Broadway (at the Old Town visitors center) and Ellipse.

An Impossible Dream or a Vision of the Future?
State House Montpelier, Vermont , October 28, 2005

Sponsored by the Second Vermont Republic, the convention, which will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 5:00 p.m., is open to the public and free of charge.
This historic event will be the first statewide convention on secession in the United States since North Carolina voted to secede from the Union on May 20, 1861.
Three decisive challenges for planet Earth loom on the horizon and condition the prospective paths of world development: satisfying the world’s need for energy which is cheap and cleaner in its processes, products and systems of use; secondly, accelerated economic growth on the part of the economically less developed countries within a framework of democratic freedoms and the self-determination of peoples; thirdly, environmental sustainability as an eco-efficiency value of nation systems.
The aim is to defeat the Cassandras of the energy Apocalypse and to reconcile the need for a secure supply of oil to the consumer nations with those of the oil-producing countries; to achieve a consensus of suggestions regarding the need for a long-term global response in terms of investments in alternative energy sources; to reconcile the role of market mechanisms with the efficient governing of energy resources, and to reduce international political tensions in the areas of the world most directly involved in oil production.

Peak Oil is finally getting more attention in the mainstream media. Environmental circles are also discussing it more, as evidenced by the Green Festival in San Francisco Nov. 5-6. This 4th annual event is co-sponsored by Global Exchange and Co-Op America (www.greenfestivals.org). Their previous festivals have reportedly drawn 20,000 to 30,000 visitors, who pay only $15 for both days full schedule.
