Topics include: * Assessment of land * Method of design * Assumptions and expectations * Community processes * Design processes * Design tools * Market demand, trends * Standard designs, use and pitfalls * Tendering processes, assessing quotes * Report writing * Presentation tips and techniques * Lobbying, working with councils and authorities * Conflict and conflict resolution * Sustainable roads, water, waste, energy, building * Budget estimates, keeping track of costs * Finances * Legalities, by laws, management * Density, group size and effect on relationships, community economy and dynamics * Common land * Work, entrepreneurial activities * Project assessment and management * Working in teams * Clusters, meeting places * Village principles * Sacred sites and spirituality * Water and wastewater * Ecological building * Energy * Infrastructure * Privacy. The Course is Separated into two modules. Each module runs during the normal working week of Monday to Friday. Module 1 focuses on theory and techniques. Each day will consist of lectures and presentations in the EcoCentre and around the property as appropriate. Participants will be taken on guided walking tours of Crystal Waters which will enable them to see and understand the structure and engineering solutions, as well as a number of private ecological homes and gardens. There will also be a one day off-property tour where participants will see something of the bioregion, with particular emphasis on design criteria. Module 2 is a practicum, where participants will be given a ‘brief’ by a ‘client’ and will work in teams to come up with an appropriate design for a specified piece of land. This part of the programme allows participants to practice the tools and knowledge gained in the first module. We consider it to be an invaluable part of the learning process, as it requires participants to apply theoretical knowledge – this is the time when gaps in understanding or need for further information really come to the fore and can be addressed Sessions run from 9am to 5pm on Monday through Thursday, and on Friday the programme ends at 4.30pm. On some evenings there may be case studies or other presentations. The course fee includes accommodation, extensive course notes, tuition, tours and 3 catered meals plus snacks each day.
