LAST Meeting- Sequim Library

We will continue to work on the LAST Action Planner but this time it will be in our new location(confirmed) at the Sequim Library. We will meet here every Wednesday evening, 7-9 PM until 4/2/08. Then we will switch on 4/9/08 to the PA Library. We will stay at the PA Library thru the second quarter of the year, 6/25/08. The third quarter will be back in Sequim. We hope to alternate between Sequim & PA every quarter.

Agenda for the 1/16/08 Meeting:
1. Plan for a table presence at Making It Last conference, March 21 & 22. We need a LAST banner, brochures and volunteers to be at the table to discuss LAST & our objectives. We need ideas for the table presentation to catch people's attention.
2. How can we better handle/present the LAST Action Planner so it is a more readable & work friendly document? It would be nice to be able to project the whole document on a wall so we can better work on it as group. We will continue to identify priorities and actions that can be/should be implemented first.
3. Sid will get the meeting posted in the meetings section of the local newspapers.
4. Sherry suggests consideration of starting a co-op. Lets talk about it.
http://www.kitsapfoodcoop.org/Co-Op_101.html
Sherry writes>> A friend of mine has been studying the idea of getting a co-op going in Bremerton. Looks like there is an effort underway to do just that. How is this for a topic? Many transplants to the area from California and other urban areas frequently mention the desire to have a Whole Foods come here, or a Trader Joe’s. But I like the concept that the money brought into the Co-op shopping experience generally stays in the community in which it’s situated, rather than being funneled out of area to stockholders or private owners.
4. Please relay other agenda items to Sid.

Peak Oil, Climate Change and Business

Peak Oil, Climate Change and Business

It looks like peak oil is going to arrive right when we are getting ready to battle climate change. This raises a whole new set of questions:

  • Which do you prepare for first?
  • How is peak oil going to change the future of energy in this country?
  • Is it going to be regulation or scarcity that is going to make energy more expensive — or both?

With the recent increase in oil price, it's important to know how to prepare your businesses properly.

This sixty-minute live online Executive Briefing addresses the most important elements of climate change, peak oil and how they affect each other. It includes a fifteen-minute Q&A period at the end with the presenter.

Questions that we'll answer include:

Climate Change

  • What is driving climate change?
  • Why are so many scientists saying the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) underestimated the impact of near-term global temperature rise?

Peak Oil

  • What is Hubbert's Peak and who was Hubbert?
  • How do we know oil is peaking? Haven't there been predictions of peaking before?
  • Why is oil so hard to replace in our economy?
  • What are the major global forces increasing the price of oil?
  • What are the alternatives to oil? Do we really have 150 years of coal left? Why is natural gas next?
  • Where is your business most vulnerable to ever-increasing energy prices in the future?

Peak Oil and Climate Change

  • What impact will declining fossil fuel availability have on global average temperature?

Preparing for a Carbon-Constrained World

  • Why do we recommend that your business not buy carbon offsets? Why should it not participate in a carbon market if it's not mandatory for your industry?
  • Why is Governor Schwarzenegger likely to use the economic escape clause in AB32, the carbon emissions legislation he signed into law?
  • What are the most important elements you should have in your Carbon Reduction Plan?

This Executive Briefing is offered at no cost and spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

This webinar really tied it all together...excellent.
