The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak OilSubmitted Sun, 2008-02-03 08:13 — Toban Black Students Acting in Development film series launch: When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into atailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships andstruggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people.They share how they transitioned from highly mechanized agriculture tousing organic farming and urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis. The film opens with a shorthistory of Peak Oil, a term for the time when world oil production willreach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the onlycountry that has faced such a crisis, is an example of options and hope. Light refreshments available. Sustainable Orcas Island MeetingSubmitted Fri, 2008-01-25 18:06 — pheikki I’ve scheduled our library meeting room for Feb 5 from 3:30 to 5:30 to talk more about specific ideas. We’ll also be setting up various smaller groups to work on their own schedules as works best for people geographically, etc. Also, some facilitation to make sure we get everything out that we want to focus on. Please continue to send me your ideas for the next meeting and otherwise. At some point we’ll transition into a system that works better for fluid exchange of ideas, etc., rather than the bottleneck of my email list. Thanks!
