"Global Warming: How Do We Manage the Risks?"
Tuesday, March 4, 2008
7:30 p.m.

Stephen Schneider will talk about how much more could be done to substantially reduce the magnitude of the risks associated with global warming if only we can summon the political will to take decisive action—soon.

Schneider is the founder and editor of the interdisciplinary journal, Climatic Change. He is editor-in-chief of the Encyclopedia of Climate and Weather and author of The Genesis Strategy: Climate and Global Survival; The Coevolution of Climate and Life; Global Warming: Are We Entering the Greenhouse Century? and Laboratory Earth: The Planetary Gamble We Can’t Afford to Lose.

In 1992 Schneider received a MacArthur Fellowship for his ability to integrate and interpret the results of global climate research through public lectures, seminars, classroom teaching, environmental assessment committees, media appearances, Congressional testimony, and research collaboration with colleagues. He was elected to membership in the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in April 2002. Currently, he is actively involved with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Lessons for the Future from Canada’s Climate Policy Failures

Dr. Mark Jaccard, professor in Resource Environmental Management at SFU, former Chair of the BC Utilities Commission and an award winning author of numerous books on climate and energy policy, critiques where Canadian governments have gone wrong in fighting global warming, highlights policies which can reduce emissions, and explains why BC's new carbon tax is an important milestone.

You should come to this talk if you want to be able to distinguish a market mechanism from a regulation or voluntary initiative and understand which one can reduce emissions most efficiently.

Bring along a friend who is cynical that any government has the ability to reduce emissions, or who thinks that the solution to this problem lies outside the world of public policy all together.

One of the talks in the Global Warming: Evidence, Inspiration for Action, Solutions series
hosted by Voters Taking Action on Climate Change. These talks are focused on refreshing our commitment to action and reaching out to others.
Canadian Memorial United Church (15th and Burrard). Free admission.

Winter Gardening in Muskoka

Hi all, I would like to invite interested people to a day of disscusion (March 15th) around winter gardening and seed saving here at our little farm in Muskoka.
We have had a winter garden for 5 years now and are ready to share the up's and downs of it all. Further to all of that is the whole seed thing which I don't feel we are paying enough attention to, I find that there is still lots of people out there that still find this process a little mystifying. We have been saving seeds and reusing them and sharing them on our farm for about 10 years and will allways have a reserve of seeds.
We can do a little tour of our greenhouse (winter garden) and have a discussion.
We can Check out our root celler and talk about that.
We can discuss the seed saving thing and the posibilities of a little seed bank(co-op?)
If you bring some lunch we can have something to eat.
Call if you are interested.

February 22-24, Feb. 29-March 2, March 14-16, 28-30, April 11-13, 2008
Weekend Permaculture Design Course in Columbus, Ohio

“Help green the city and prepare for climate change. Build networks of support and empower yourself with the skills of ecological design as we search for the roots of permanent culture”

Description: Over five weekends (Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays), we will present the permaculture design curriculum with special emphasis on urban applications, strategies for changing climate and building local networks of support.

The class will implement at least one of the design projects by rehabilitating an old orchard as a forest garden on the 40-acre campus of the United Methodist Children’s Home in Worthington; helping to move this historic institution back to its agricultural roots and forward to a second century of sustainability.

The course is co-sponsored by Simply Living Columbus, and the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association, and UMCH. Some work-trade scholarships will be available.

Instructors: Peter Bane, Rhonda Baird and guests.
Cost: $895 including weekend lunches and course materials, $150 deposit required.
