Is Suburbia Sustainable When Energy Costs Are Skyrocketing?

ECLA PA LAUNCHES NEW MONTHLY SUSTAINABILITY & ENVIRONMENTAL FILM/DISCUSSION SERIES at HATBORO PA'S FIRST FRIDAY ARTS & CULTURE CELEBRATION

IS SUBURBIA SUSTAINABLE WHEN ENERGY COSTS ARE SKYROCKETING?

That question will be asked at a new monthly environmental and sustainability film and discussion series at the first of Hatboro, Pennsylvania's First Friday Celebrations. The series is hosted by concert pianist and piano teacher, Mary Comtois, at her new, holistic Art of Life Studios in Hatboro's Red Barn Mall. The Post Carbon Institute's ECLA PA will present two cutting edge films on the environment, global climate change, and oil depletion to an audience that is growing alarmed by skyrocketing energy costs.

Larry Menkes, a regional coordinator for the Post Carbon Institute in southeastern Pennsylvania will present an updated version of a film program that played to packed audiences when first shown in 2004. Menkes was a co-founder of Warminster Township's groundbreaking Energy Advisory Committee.

The first film of the evening, award-winning The End of Suburbia, is credited with introducing the concept of peak oil to an unsuspecting American public. At that time Americans were totally unaware that the cost of energy would begin a relentless climb toward ten dollars a gallon and beyond.

The second video, Natural Capitalism, is a presentation on a reinvention of capitalism that could save the planet from environmental destruction and resource depletion. More upbeat and positive, Natural Capitalism is a rare presentation by Time Hero of the Planet award winner, Amory Lovins of the Rocky Mountain Institute, a famed research facility on energy efficiency. Lovins is a recipient of the Right Livelihood Award, known as the "Alternative Nobel" prize.

Audience participation is encouraged. Menkes' home is a lab for low cost energy improvements. As a building energy surveyor, Menkes, a trained energy auditor, will offer suggestions on how to cut home energy costs by 50% and more.

The Art of Life Studios is at Suite 6 in the Red Barn Mall, 120 South York Road in Hatboro, near Byberry Road. Admission is FREE and the program will begin at 7:30 PM. Seating is limited so reservations are suggested. For information and reservations call (215) 444-0249 or email at: artoflifestudios@gmail.com.

The film series will also be shown at two or three more area Friday locations. One is scheduled for the Center for Radikal Healing on the Warminster-Upper Southampton border, and other locations TBA.

Viewing of How Cuba Survived Peak Oil tomorrow!

Sierra Club's Southeast MI group presents:
"The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil"
with WRIF Radio Host Peter Werbe

Thursday, April 3, 2008
6:30pm Potluck
7:30pm Program

Northwest Unitarian-Universalist Church
23925 Northwestern Hwy, Southfield, MI
(located along the south-bound Hohn Lodge Fwy service
drive between 9 & 10 Mile)

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's
economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut
by more than half--and food by 80%--people were
desperate. This film tells of the hardships and
struggles as well the community and creativity of the
Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share
how they transformed from a highly mechanized,
industrial agricultural system to one using organic
methods of farming and local, urban gardens. This film
opens with a brief history of Peak Oil, a term for the
time in our history when world oil production reaches
its all-time peak and begins to decline forever. While
there remains some debate as to when we will reach
peak oil, most experts agree the time is now. Cuba,
the only country that has faced such a crisis, is an
example of options and hope.

Join us after the film for a discussion with WRIF
radio personality Peter Werbe, host of the popular
"Night Call" show, who has recently returned from
Cuba. He will share his observations about the island with
us as we continue to explore local sustainability
strategies for metro Detroit.

February 22-24, Feb. 29-March 2, March 14-16, 28-30, April 11-13, 2008
Weekend Permaculture Design Course in Columbus, Ohio

“Help green the city and prepare for climate change. Build networks of support and empower yourself with the skills of ecological design as we search for the roots of permanent culture”

Description: Over five weekends (Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays), we will present the permaculture design curriculum with special emphasis on urban applications, strategies for changing climate and building local networks of support.

The class will implement at least one of the design projects by rehabilitating an old orchard as a forest garden on the 40-acre campus of the United Methodist Children’s Home in Worthington; helping to move this historic institution back to its agricultural roots and forward to a second century of sustainability.

The course is co-sponsored by Simply Living Columbus, and the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association, and UMCH. Some work-trade scholarships will be available.

Instructors: Peter Bane, Rhonda Baird and guests.
Cost: $895 including weekend lunches and course materials, $150 deposit required.
