April Public Meeting: Charlie StephensSubmitted Thu, 2008-03-27 05:06 — plunsfo The leveling and relatively imminent decline in the world’s fossil fuel production lags somewhat behind global warming in the process of societal awakening. Portland’s Peak Oil Task Force did some fine work in highlighting the issues we’ll all face as energy supplies become tighter and much more expensive. Their report contained a number of useful recommendations and preparatory work for the City’s consideration. So how are we doing? Can a relative handful of people make a big enough difference, or do we need to educate a lot more people? Do we need to re-think any of this work? Are there other related threats to our community’s well-being that weren’t considered? As we face peak fossil fuels, climate change and a major financial meltdown, which one will get us first, and what does that mean for the others? What do we do? A former Senior Policy Analyst with the Oregon Department of Energy, Mr. Stephens created Oregon’s Sustainable Building Tax Credit Program and is a leading expert on sustainable community development, energy efficiency strategies and new technologies. He was quite active with Portland's Peak Oil Task Force in 2006 and 2007. He recently completed 17 years of service at the Oregon Department of Energy focusing on residential energy efficiency and renewable energy applications, new technology development, sustainable building and community development, and energy policy for the State of Oregon. Please join us! _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Meeting Location: Unitarian Universalist Community Church, in Hillsboro: Near the Orenco MAX station (address below). 9th Annual "That's My Farmer!" for Community-Supported Agriculture/CSA'sSubmitted Sun, 2008-04-06 10:07 — Sundog Are you looking for a way to prepare for energy uncertainty, respond to global warming and support local farmers and our Relocalized economy? Come to the 9th Annual “That’s my Farmer” celebration on Tuesday, April 8th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 13th and Olive Street. Eighteen faith-based communities in Lane County sponsor this event to highlight the importance of supporting local farmers, offer an opportunity to meet local farmers and learn more about participating in Community Supported Agriculture or CSA’s. CSA means buying a weekly box of fresh fruits and vegetables from a local farmer from May through the fall with the money paid in the spring to help the farmer begin the planting season. Meet the farmers between 6:30-7:30. Presentations by farmers begin at 7:30 with much more to follow. The event is free but donations are accepted to support low income families access local organic produce. Participants chose from 11 different farms and sign up for weekly food boxes from May through the fall. Each box includes a mixture of fresh fruits, vegetables, maybe eggs or even meat. The cost varies from $300 - $600 for about 20 weeks worth of food. Ted Purdy coordinates Food for Lane County’s Youth Farm which participates in the program. Purdy says the program also benefits your body, climate change and local business. “It’s local so we know it's not getting transported from far away and it's not getting those 'food miles,'” said Purdy. “It's fresher and often a better variety.” The program also encourages people to buy “That’s My Farmer Bucks” - script to use at farmers markets. Unused script, donations, and money generated by “That’s My Farmer” help low income families to afford their own food boxes.
