Essential Seed-Saving Techniques for Home and Small Farm

ESSENTIAL SEED SAVING TECHNIQUES FOR HOME AND SMALL FARM
May 4 — Instructor: Carol Deppe, Ph.D., geneticist, plant breeder, advocate for sustainable agriculture and farm-based research, and author of "Breed Your Own Vegetable Varieties: The Gardener's and Farmer's Guide to Plant Breeding and Seed Saving".

Food Security begins with the saving of seeds. On a small scale the techniques are crop specific. This used to be a skill passed through families. In our urbanized culture that has not been the case. Here's an opportunity to learn from those who do it successfully (most of the time) year after year.

* When to pick and what to pick
* Problems with possible crossing
* The range of post harvest cleaning and preparation practices
* Storage strategies
* Planting for seed production
* Reliable sources when things don't work out

Please arrive at 9:45! class will start promptly at 10:00. Thanks

Smith's Crossing Working Bee

The Bundaberg Landcare Group holds working bees at Smiths Crossing on the Kolan river (via Bucca) on the first Sunday of every month from 9am to 11am. This month, join Landcare as well as the Hinkler Burnett Greens and SustainaBundy at Smith's Crossing for a bit of weed clearing along with a bit of socialising - and morning tea is free! For details on dress and requirements contact Mike Johnson on 0741520787 weeknights and weekends. So why not come along and enjoy a pleasant Sunday morning, with like minded people helping saving some beautiful old trees, and some young ones as well. The work is only as hard as you wish it to be and all tools and assistance are provided. Think globally act locally.

Directions: Just follow the Rosedale Road north of Bundaberg and take the Birthamba turnoff 6 klms along, and you will reach the picnic area beside the Kolan River. The crossing is a favourite place for canoeing and a quiet day next to the river.
