Urban MeltdownSubmitted Fri, 2008-01-04 23:47 — greeninsight January 14, 2008 Clive Doucet Urban Meltdown "Urban Meltdown: Cities, Climate Change and Politics as Usual" is a reflection on 40 years of urban activism for more sustainable cities. One of the questions the author poses is - why does urban sprawl continue more fiercely than ever half a century after Jane Jacobs and many others have filled libraries documenting the destructive effects of mall/sprawl? What happened to the Sixties and what can we learn from those failed dreams is another subject the author explores to connect the past with the present. Another question deals with the phenomenon of Just in Time delivery and how this has changed the landscape. The author, Clive Doucet, has been a city councilor in Ottawa for ten years and in the author of plays, poems, novels and memoirs. In 2004, he was voted Canada's Greenest City Councilor. In 2004, Clive was chosen as Canada’s Greenest City Councilor. It recognized his lifelong work to halt expressway sprawl and promote pedestrian oriented, people, not car focused communities. He has championed Ottawa’s pilot light rail project, new sidewalk and intersection standards for the city. He’s the author of plays, novels, memoirs and poems. Crude Impact film screeningSubmitted Wed, 2008-01-09 19:16 — Toban Black free film screening Fanshawe College, Room D1052 (D building) Crude Impact is an award-winning documentary film which Chris Vernon of TheOilDrum.com called " a terrific film... best documentary I have seen on the subject." This feature film explores the interconnection between human domination of the planet, and the discovery and use of oil. Crude Impact was awarded the Best Environmental Feature Film at the 3rd Annual Artivist Film Festival in Los Angeles. Crude Impact was also awarded the Social Justice Award at the 22nd Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The film was an official selection of the prestigious International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam. The objective of the film is to promote positive, hopeful change in the way we source and use energy. Jim Kunstler to address Capital Region Energy ForumSubmitted Sun, 2007-12-30 11:41 — xtraspatial Our January 14th program promises to be very special. Jim Kunstler will be our speaker. As many of you will remember, he was our speaker two years ago at what turned out to be the first CREF meeting. Jim Kunstler wrote that very powerful novel, “The Long Emergency”, and spoke of his book at our initial meeting. Jim’s deep and penetrating perspective of the far reaching fallout that comes with Peak Oil really sets him apart from many our other analysts/writers. Kunstler believes that major changes and accommodations of our urban and suburban living are going to be necessary if they are to survive. Since there is now indication that we are already entering the era of Peak Oil, and the peak may now be less than 3-5 years off, Kunstler’s great concerns may be experienced by all of us in the very near term. The Title that he is giving to his talk, “The Long Emergency, Two Years Out” speaks to that point. It is not often that we have a noted author to address us. You should definitely bring your friends and relatives to join us. Jim Kunstler will not disappoint us. Our next CREF meeting will take place on January 14, 2008 at the Italian American Community Center on Washington Avenue Extension. The buffet table and the Business meeting open at 6:30pm. The cost of the excellent buffet dinner is $27. If you come for the meeting and the Presentation, only and do not choose to eat, there is no charge. Kunstler’s presentation is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm, and to conclude at 9:00pm.
