LAST Action Planner Meeting, etc.

We will continue working on the LAST Action Planner in conjunction with developing specific handout sheets for the Making It Last! event that is coming up March 21 & 22 at Peninsula College. Our table for this event will be discussed.

The lead article in 1/17/08 Seattle P-I (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/347698_legislature17.html) reports that our representative, Maralyn Chase (32nd district - Edmonds, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore), has been taking a lot of flak for having introduced a bill (HB 2420) to establish a carbon tax. The bill has irritated those who oppose new taxes and new fees. You can read the bill or a summary at http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/Summary.aspx?bill=2420&year=2007.

A carbon tax is one of two ways for dealing with the problem of greenhouse gas emissions through government action, the other being the cap-and-trade system. Her bill proposes a tax that would channel money into a state fund that would be used to support the development of non-carbon or low-carbon energy sources and technologies. It is true that companies would pass the tax through to consumers in the form of higher energy prices, but the new energy sources and techologies eventually will cause the tax to fade away as CO2 emissions are greatly reduced or eliminated.

John Kaufmann from the Oregon Department of Energy will be speaking about the latest data regarding oil supplies and an overview of the Portland Peak Oil Task Force.

John is Senior Policy Analyst in the Conservation Division of Oregon Department of Energy, served as a staff for the City of Portland's Peak Oil Taskforce and recently spoke at ASPO-USA conference in Houston.
