Earth Hour

Earth Hour: See the light by going dark
Want to see the difference you can make? Join Earth Hour March 29 by turning off your lights from 8 to 9 pm and urge your friends, neighbors, businesses and government agencies to join this international demonstration, too.
Last year, Sydney, Australia turned off its lights for an hour  and energy use dropped 10.2 percent. Other nations are joining the global action to give Earth an hour off while dramatizing the impact of human activities.  How much can we save by switching off unessential lights?
To join and learn what else you can do, see http://www12.earthhourus.org/

Sustainable Maleny needs YOU

Saturday 29 March 2008, 2-4pm
Sustainable Maleny Public Meeting
Masonic Lodge
31 Tamarind Street, Maleny

Featuring "Think Global, Eat Local", directed by Morag Gamble & Evan Raymond
(15 countries over 15 years in 15 minutes)

We've been a little slow in getting started this year, but the date for the next meeting has now been set. Come along for our first big meeting for the year on Saturday 29th March, 2-4pm at the Masonic Hall, Tamarind Street, Maleny.

Now more than ever, it's time to roll our sleeves up and prepare for bumpy times ahead. With oil well over $US100, the US economy deflating like an old balloon, and food prices marching ever upwards, things are becoming rather urgent. We have to start building our sustainable society now, while we still have the resources and economy to do it. And what better place to start than our own doorstep?

We've proven that remarkable things can be achieved when communities form co-operative efforts. Our Solar Hot Water drive delivered exactly 100 heavily discounted solar hot water systems to homes on the Range. Our Bridge Creek Gardens project is in full swing, and has received a mammoth amount of effort and enthusiasm from many volunteers. It's time to follow up with more such initiatives. Are YOU willing to stand up play a part?

Here are some ideas for projects which have been received some interest so far, but not much action. Can you help make them reality?

  • Photovoltaic Solar Drive
  • Car pooling
  • Permablitz network
  • More community gardens
  • Community stall at Witta Markets
  • Re-skilling workshops
  • Energy Descent Action Plan
  • Electric vehicle drive (er, bulk buy)
  • Tool-share Groups
  • Water Refill Station
  • "Tupperware" parties
  • Alliances & Relationship
  • Publicity (& merchandising)
  • Web site
  • Fund-raising
  • Or do you have some other idea for a project that you could get excited about, if only you had some co-conspirators?

We'll also have a showing of SEED International's short inspirational film "Think Global : Eat Local - A diet for a sustainable society". For more info, visit http://www.localfood.net.au

    See you there!

SustainaBundy All Day Movie Festival

What a deal! For just a single gold coin donation you can watch a whole day's worth of movies about our sustainable future, at the School of Arts on Bourbong Street. Pick and choose which movies you want to see throughout the day, then stick around afterwards to chat with other people who care! Become part of the Bundaberg region's sustainability movement... change history. Gold coin donation for the day - tea, coffee and biscuits will be available.

SCHEDULE

9am - The End of Suburbia (78 min)
The End of Suburbia explores our modern, suburban way of life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now. The consequences of inaction in the face of this global crisis are enormous. As energy prices skyrocket in the coming years, how will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done NOW, individually and collectively, to avoid The End of Suburbia?

10:30am - The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil (53 min)
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people. They share how they transitioned from highly mechanized agriculture to using organic farming and urban gardens. Cuba, one of the only countries in the world to have already faced the peak oil crisis, is an example of options and hope.

11:35am - An Inconvenient Truth (100 min)
Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of the world's scientists are right, we have just a few years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced. The film offers a passionate and inspirational look at Al Gore's fervent crusade to halt global warming's deadly progress in its tracks by exposing the myths and misconceptions that surround it.

1:30pm - A Convenient Truth: Urban Solutions from Curitiba, Brazil (52 min)
An informative, inspirational documentary aimed at sharing ideas on how to turn problems into cost effective and environment-friendly solutions in cities worldwide. The documentary focuses on innovations in transportation, recycling, social benefits including affordable housing, parks and the processes that transformed Curitiba into one of the most livable cities in the world.

2:35pm - The Future of Food (88 min)
Offering an in depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled grocery store shelves for the past decade. The film also explores alternatives to large-scale industrial agriculture, placing organic and sustainable agriculture as real solutions to the farm crisis today.

4:15pm - The Happy Box (13 min)- Farmers and consumers meet in a win-win alliance when people join a membership farm, paying the farmer in advance for a weekly share of the crop. Demonstrating that sustainable agriculture is economically viable for farmers and beneficial to both people and the environment, this brief film essay explores the emerging popularity of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and its promise for the future.

4:30pm - Eat Your Park (16 min) - 10 years of community permaculture farming in the heart of Brisbane, Australia

4:45pm - School Gardens (7 min) - If you've ever thought of setting up a garden in your school this is a must see for you!

5:00pm - Story of Stuff (20 min)
From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. This fast-paced, fact-filled film looks at the underside of our production and consumption patterns, exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something, it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.

5:30pm - There's No Such Thing As Away: Managing Waste (20 min)
An interview by Andi Hazelwood of SustainaBundy with James Stanfield from Bundaberg Waste Management. What happens to our rubbish and our recycling when we put it out on the kerb for pickup? An eye opening look at our local consumption and disposal habits.

Instructors: Peter Bane, Rhonda Baird and guests.
Cost: $895 including weekend lunches and course materials, $150 deposit required.
