April 22nd: Book Club Meeting

Our monthly book club meets again! Please join us for what have been lively conversations! We will be discussing The Great Turning by David Korten, Parts 2 and 3. (chapters 5-14. The chapters are pretty short, and emminently readable.)

clickable

There is great excitement about this book as David Korten addresses so magnificently issues we find ourselves very concerned about in the context of peak oil. We have decided to take 3 months to go through this book, as a result, and this is month #2. This longer timeline will enable everyone to appreciate in greater depth the importance of Korten's work.

"The threat of continued warfare to the future of humanity has become dire. The Great Turning explores that threat in detail and provides an equally detailed plan for meeting — and overcoming — it. Written in the author’s trademark clear, compelling style, this timely book uncovers the roots of Empire in ancient Athens and charts the long transition from the institutions of monarchy to those of the global economy as the favored instruments of imperialism. Korten then discusses the promise of early America as a democracy dedicated to spreading liberty and freedom — and the failure of the “American experiment” through the contemporary takeover of the U.S. government by corporate plutocrats, religious theocrats, and neoconservative militarists in pursuit of naked imperial ambition. Korten draws on sources as varied as evolution, developmental psychology, and the wisdom of religious mystics to make the case for “Earth Community” — a people-centered, community-based future that is both possible and necessary.

Earth Day 2008

From the Earth Day website:

"Ok people, this is it. Earth Day 2008 is about you! The first Earth Day in 1970 brought more than 20 million people out into the streets to protest against environmental destruction and we changed history! Our environmental problems in 1970 were big, but climate change is bigger, and we, the people, need to take matters into our own hands immediately. That is why you need to...

Do something! - Create an event - Tell us what you did! - Register an event - Check out what's going on in your community! - Find an event Walk, Bike, Row to a major Earth Day event around the world - Together, we will solve Climate Change."

Right now there are no events listed in Australia- let's see if we can change that!
