“Tap into Your Water” – London Citizens organize Water Forum to raise awareness about this precious resource.

London, ON: “Tap into Your Water” – London Citizens organize Water Forum to raise awareness about this precious resource.

Prior to the announcement concerning Bisphenol A in plastic water bottles a concerned group of London citizens were in the process of organizing a Water Forum for May 31st. Representatives came together from the Council of Canadians - London Chapter and wastefreeworld.org, to design a forum around water that would educate and encourage participation of interested Londoners.

“This forum will provide citizens with an opportunity to learn first hand, from those working with water every day, what the concerns are with bottled water, what is done to protect our drinking water at source, what the benefits are of our municipal water system, and what to do if there are water advisories. This is a unique opportunity for Londoners to Tap into their Water”. quoted Richard Bird, Water Protection Committee Council of Canadians.

Organizers have obtained knowledgable panelists from Polaris Institute, UTRCA, City of London, and the Waterloo Region District School Board, to equip attendees with a wealth of information with respect to municipal and bottled water.

“When we are asked for water at The Tea Haus, our customers can receive a glass of filtered water (no bottles!) free of charge. Water is a necessity of life and we don't believe in charging for it. Most people complain about the cost of gas these days but are more than willing to pay $2 for 591ml of water...just a thought..”. said Stefanie Stoelzel, The Tea Haus website.

The facilitated session will include breakout groups. These groups will be asked to formulate a water strategy from what they have learned and to participate in an ongoing dialogue in their community.

“We know that this forum is just a first step to get the interest flowing, but as with any long journey it begins with the first step” said Gary Brown, Water Chemist. “We are excited by the prospect of what people will contribute as a result of discussions in the break-out groups. If we can coalesce a group of water enthusiasts we will be able to cause ripples of positive change in the community.”

More information is available at Council of Canadians – London Chapter website.

This community forum has been made possible through the dedicated efforts of a few volunteers. In addition, the City of London, the Upper Thames Region Conservation Authority, Novack’s, Trojan Technologies, The Tea Haus, Ten Thousand Villages and locals of CAW and CUPE have come forward to sponsor this event and bring it to Londoners for no admission.

Registrations will be accepted at tapintoyourwater@gmail.com until Tuesday May 27, 2008

MULCH MADNESS!

In support of World Environment Day's CO2: Kick The Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy theme, for one weekend only Bundaberg Region Waste Management is offering as much mulch as you can legally carry, FREE!

On Saturday the 31st of May and Sunday the 1st of June, stop by any waste management facility in the Bundaberg Regional Council Area for your free mulch. They are: University Drive Landfill, Qunaba Landfill (Potters Rd Bargara), Meadowvale Landfill, Avondale landfill, South Kolan Transfer Station, Tirroan Landfill (Gin Gin), Childers Landfill, Woodgate Transfer Station, Buxton Transfer Station, Booyal Transfer Station and Cordalba Transfer Station.

Mulch will be loaded by machine at University Drive, Qunaba, Meadowvale and Childers. The other facilities will be self load only! Free self load mulch will also be available at the World Environment Day Celebration on Sunday June 1 at the PCYC. Come with your ute, trailer or even semi-trailer - along with tarpaulins and ropes to secure the load - and take home all the mulch you need for your garden projects! For more information, call Bundaberg Waste Management on 4155 1697.

Why Mulch?
- It holds 90 percent of its own weight in water – adding organic matter to your soil turns it into a water-holding 'dam' that needs less watering!
- It protects the soil from the sun, wind, rain and evaporation and reduces leaching and topsoil loss!
- It acts as insulation to regulate the temperature of your soil, making for happier, healthier plants!
- It slows down weeds, which can choke your plants and rob them of nutrients and water!
- It protects roots near the soil surface from damage from cultivation!
- It encourages earthworms that aerate and drain the soil!
- It improves soil structure and prevents soil compaction!
- It encourages microbial growth which may stimulate plant growth!
- It provides a home for "good" bugs and can control plant diseases!

AND...
- If organic matter goes to landfill, it produces methane, which is a much more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon. Properly mulching and composting avoids methane production, does ALL the good things listed above AND draws carbon from the atmosphere and returns it to the soil!

SustainaBundy will be at the University Drive facility for MULCH MADNESS on Saturday the 31st of May selling the 2008 SustainaBundy Directory and Guide, "got local?" stickers and talking mulch! See you there!

Climate Change 1, at Euglena Academy(open enrollment)

Please find attached a (revised) flier for the upcoming Climate Change 1 weekend workshops at Euglena Academy.

This workshop offers a unique perspective on climate change based in systems sciences & geophysiology not available anywhere else in the region.

Climate change driven by global heating will be rapid, extreme, chaotic & violent. It will challenge the stability of civilization, and sooner than later.

Two workshop dates are scheduled so far, both at Euglena in Eugene:

* Friday, May 30 - Sunday, June 1
* Friday, June 6 - Sunday, June 8

(Also offered soon in Portland ... A second workshop, CC2 on solutions, is on the drawing board; TBA soon ... )

1. Euglena events - courses, workshops & special events - are for adults 18+. Without special arrangements, those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent.

2. Reservations are strongly suggested for Euglena events.

On most evenings, they are not required, & will not be necessary this weekend.

However, we have limited seating & space.

Therefore, after May 24, for workshops & special events - like free climate lectures & Symbiotic Saturdays - the only way to guarantee entry is with a reservation.

You are always welcome to drop by w/o reservation, but we can't guarantee entry w/o one.

See this page for more on reservations & studio etiquette here.

That page on etiquette encourages guests to remember that Euglena is a professional educational space & multimedia studio. All guests are expected to treat the space & all other guests with respect & dignity.

3. Through Saturday, June 7, Symbiotic Saturday open house events in the evening will be by contribution. No one will be turned away for lack of ability to pay. But after June 7, there will be a charge for most Symbiotic Saturdays (that can be deducted from your Euglena subscription account).

Please distribute this widely electronically, and/or make paper copies for distribution.

I'm happy to answer any questions[the website also has much more].

info@euglena-academy.net
I am often difficult to reach by phone (541-762-1217). If you call, please leave short message with name, phone number and the best time to return your call...

International Conference on Peak Oil & Climate Change: Paths to Sustainability

FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON LOCAL SUSTAINABILITY TO BE HELD IN GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN

Local Future is hosting the first-of-its-kind International Conference on Peak Oil and Climate Change: Paths to Sustainability, on Friday, May 30 through Sunday, June 1, at the Calvin College’s Fine Arts Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Many international experts believe that the worldwide production of oil has “peaked” and that the coming decades will bring a decline in the amount of available oil, leading to a global economic, environmental and social crisis unless steps are taken now to plan for the future.

The conference is geared toward helping the general public, business leaders and lawmakers understand how global oil supplies and the burning of petroleum-based fuels for energy has caused sharp rises in gas prices that impact not only our means of transportation, but the price of our food, shelter and well-being.

The conference is designed around four breakout tracks, covering broad topics of energy, food, environment, community, and the economy. Participants will hear from leading professionals and international experts who understand the various symptoms of peak oil and climate change, and have knowledge of how we can overcome the associated economic and environmental challenges that lie ahead by developing sustainable cultures within our local communities.
