FILM SCREENING
Museum London (http://www.londonmuseum.on.ca/location.html)
Lecture Theatre
Radiant City: A Documentary about Urban Sprawl
Followed by a Q & A with directors Gary Burns and Jim Brown
Venturing into territory both familiar and foreign, directors Gary Burns and Jim Brown turn the
documentary genre inside out, crafting a vivid account of life in the Late Suburban Age.
Burns and Brown rummage through a toybox of cultural references, from Jane Jacobs to The
Sopranos, to create a provocative reflection on why we live the way we do. Riffling off sitcoms and
reality TV, they play fast and loose with a range of cinematic devices to consider what happens when
cities get sick and mutate.
Radiant City was recently awarded the Genie for Best Documentary.

Cuba, an isolated island nation, rebuilt its quality of life following the collapse of cheap oil, supplied by the former Soviet Union. This fascinating and empowering film shows how communities pulled together, created solutions, and ultimately thrived in spite of their decreased dependence on imported energy. Discussion to follow.
Another description:
When Cuba lost access to Soviet oil in the early 1990s, the country faced an immediate crisis—feeding the population—and an ongoing challenge: how to create a new low-energy society. This film tells the story of the Cuban people’s hardship, ingenuity, and triumph over sudden adversity, through cooperation, conservation, and community

Dear London Cyclists:
Do you face--
Inadequate bike parking / lock-up racks?
Icy winter commuter trails?
Decaying shoulders and gutters on main arterials and side streets?
Unsafe intersections?
Erroneous traffic violation charges?
Road rage hassles?
Etc., etc., etc.?
On Friday, May 9th, 2008, at 6:30pm in the Stevenson & Hunt room 'A' of the Central Library (251 Dundas), there will be a meeting to discuss
issues and concerns regarding cycling in London, Ontario. Cyclists of all types are encouraged to attend. The ultimate goal is to form a
London cycling advocacy organization to lobby city officials for improvements to London's cycling infrastructure and for legislative
support.
Mark your calendars and tell your cycling friends!
Sincerely Yours,
Denver Nixon

Subject: PSU Sustainability: Presentation on Urban Environment - May 9, 11-12pm, Smith 238
"Feedback Mechanisms in the Urban Environment: How do heat & air quality
episodes and public advisories impact human behavior...and vice versa?"
Presenter: Dr. David Sailor, Associate Professor, Mechanical and Materials
Engineering, Portland State University.
Date: Friday, May 9th
Time: 11:00 - 12:00pm with refreshments served afterwards
Place: Smith Center, Room 238
This presentation will start with a background into the causes, effects, and
potential for mitigation of the urban heat island. It will then highlight
results from an NSF-funded project that seeks to understand the feedback
mechanisms in the urban environment. Specifically, this project explores the
extent to which people modify their behavior in response to excessive heat,
poor air quality, and public advisories... and the extent to which such
behavior change can impact heat and air quality episodes through changes in
emissions of pollutants and waste heat.
Dr. Sailor is an expert in urban climates and how they~Rre affected by
buildings, energy consumption, and human activity. His research is in the
general area of Energy and the Environment. In recent years the focus of his
work has been on modeling the urban climate, with applications in air
quality, building energy consumption, human health, and climate change.
Please see his website for details of ongoing projects:
