Film Screening - The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil

SEED, the University of Utah Office of Sustainability, & Post Carbon Salt Lake present:
The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil
6:00 pm, Wednesday, November 7
University of Utah’s Union Theater

The Story:
When the Soviet Union collapsed, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. Imports of oil were cut by more than half, and food by 80 percent. The film details the struggles and creativity of the Cuban people in transitioning from a highly industrial agricultural system to one using organic farming methods and local, urban gardens.

The Lessons:
Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis – the massive reduction of fossil fuels – is an example of options and hope. It offers an inspirational model for grassroots responses to oil production peak.

We'll talk about peak oil, war, community, urban agriculture, transportation, and sustainability.
