Great Sandy Biosphere

The Burnett Mary Regional Group is preparing to nominate the Great Sandy area as a Biosphere in recognition of its outstanding biodiversity values. A biosphere reserve is an international conservation designation given by UNESCO under its Man and the Biosphere Programme. There are 507 sites in 102 countries across the world. They go beyond confi ned protected areas, and include zones where sustainable economic development is fostered. If successful, the Great Sandy Biosphere will

• Give further international recognition of the region
• Be a boost for tourism
• Raise awareness of environmental issues
• Help attract funding

Interested members of the public are invited to attend information sessions on this proposal. They will be held at -
Bundaberg Civic Centre, Bourbong St Thurs 10th April 7pm
Gympie State High School library, Everson Rd Wed 16th April 7pm
