Post Carbon Oakville

Group manager: Shelby Tay

Notice (24/08/07) :
This group is in need of a new coordinator or steering group!

We thank Lucy Segatti for putting the group together in June of 2006 and coordinating efforts since - she is stepping down as coordinator to focus on other projects, but would be happy to answer any questions if anyone is interested in taking on the role. If you'd like to get more involved, contact Shelby Tay (email: network at postcarbon dot org), Relocalization Network Coordinator, to get started!

Statement of Intent

Post-Carbon Oakville recognizes that relocalization is key to mitigating the impacts of the rising costs of energy, transportation and food, and will work to support establishing local amenities that may become necessities in the future.

To that end, over the coming years, Post-Carbon Oakville plans to organize projects focused on:

- building a sense of community and raising awareness within neighbourhoods, such as organizing potluck picnics in neighbourhood parks, setting up neighbourhood mailbox-bulletin-boards or newsletters, obtaining permission to use facilities at local public schools as community resources after hours, setting up summer kids’ projects to design alternative energy sources or “living machines” to clean grey or contaminated water;

-restoring local food security, such as setting up neighbourhood community gardens, promoting permaculture, reviving food preservation and preparation skills, establishing neighbourhood food coops;

-promoting alternative transportation, including car coops, supporting public transit, gaining support from regional business associations for telecommuting and videoconferencing;

-supporting local businesses, by drafting and promoting a “buy local” guide;

-networking with other relocalization groups to share information and inspiration.

In addition to supporting neighbourhood initiatives, Post-Carbon Oakville will work to urge local governments to pass peak-oil resolutions that recognize the new energy reality and the need to adapt government policies appropriately.
