At Sustaining Gold, we intend to prepare for the post-carbon era by forming a strong community on the Gold Coast, who want to follow the Cuban reaction to a future oil shortage, rather than deal with a crisis involving loss of home and violence. As in the past, united we stand, divided we fall. Therefore, Sustaining Gold believes in strength of numbers in keeping the peace, keeping houses over our heads, and keeping food on the family table, regardless of financial catastrophes and an oil crisis.

We do not want an economic depression in which the rich buy the houses from bank-repossessed mortgages, and the ensuing serfdom of peasants paying rent to the new landlords. We want to remain in our homes, to grow food for ourselves and others if possible, and to care for one another rather than be predated upon by the rich or criminal gangs. Everyone has something to teach our children, and this should warrant a full belly of food every night for everyone. The Gold Coast has a good food growing climate, and enough land for a vegetarian diet for everyone. Aquaculture, and small herbivore animal meat production is possible. Mankind has lived for millennia without fossil fuels in the past, and still does in some parts of the world. Cuba survived America’s oil embargos, and have become the world’s only truly sustainable society. If Cuba could do it, so can we.
