Relocalization needs public space: if community members don’t have places where they can interact, it can be very difficult for them to form relationships, share resources, and organize to determine their community’s future.
Work with other members of your community to revitalize an existing public space or to create a new site for neighborhood interaction. Each community will have a different vision of how to develop such a project and how the finished product will look, function and be managed. Project ideas include reclaiming an underused parking lot for public space, converting a street intersection into public space, or reclaiming a vacant or abandoned lot for a community garden.

The scripts are designed as guidelines. Just as each theatre company’s production of Hamlet is different, each group will interpret the scripts differently. Groups can interpret a project to reflect their community’s particular needs and interests. As more groups begin experimenting, we will be able to develop our pool of resources, information and research on relocalization efforts. The Relocalization Network at relocalize.net provides space for this information sharing under the resource menu item. The more groups document and add content to the website, the more useful these relocalization experiments will be.
The key to using these Action Scripts successfully is to adapt them to your group’s needs, time availability and skill level. Take on project that are attainable and measurable. And above all, choose projects that inspire and excite your group.
