In a letter dated February 11, 2008, U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein asked the U.S. Secretary of Energy to respond to the February, 2007 report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The GAO report had urged the Department of Energy to establish a federal strategy to assess the timing and impact of peak oil and to advise Congress how to mitigate the potentially disastrous consequences. The Department of Energy has not thus far made any public comment in response to the GAO report (nor to its own 2005 risk management analysis known as the "Hirsch Report."
