From the Friday, March 7th, 2008 Saratogian:
A publication party for World Made by Hand, James Howard Kunstler's current novel that speculates on life in America's post-oil future, is set for Thursday, March 13, at 6 p.m. in the Atrium Lobby, Ground Floor at 18 Division St. [Saratoga Springs, NY]
The book is set in Union Grove, a fictional town in Washington County. World Made by Hand is published by Atlantic Monthly Press.
The novel is based on Kunstler's assertion that human dependency on cheap fossil fuels has driven globalization and progress during the last two centuries, and that the decline of oil production, combined with climate change, could put industrial civilization out of business.
The event is open to the public at no charge. Refreshments will be available.
[I read the book and found it a very quick and gripping tale of a summer in the not-to-distant future in a not-too-distant place. Jim's writing is fluid and he tells a good story. This book is more or less a fictionalized encapsulation of the thesis and salient points of his non-fictional 2006 book The Long Emergency. He features the book in Episode #3 of his KunstlerCast podcast. Spoiler Alert: You may not want to listen to the Podcast Episode if you are or are planning to read the book.]
