Futurewise, http://futurewise.org is a statewide public interest group working to promote healthy communities and cities while protecting farmland, forests and shorelines today and for future generations.
We are the only statewide group in Washington working to ensure that local governments manage growth responsibly. Founded in 1990, Futurewise has established an impressive track record on growth management issues as the state's primary advocate for smart growth policies.
Futurewise's organizing and advocacy work, public education and legal program, and the technical support that we provide local groups have become the foundation of good growth management in Washington.
In 2005, the organization changed its name from 1000 Friends of Washington to Futurewise to better represent the work that we stand for. Learn more about the name change.

Want to know what a smart growth organization is doing to reduce global warming? Read on.
The choices made today in land use and zoning plans about where a growing population will live and work and how they will get around will have a huge impact on global warming emissions for decades. By making good decisions about how our cities and counties grow we can reduce global warming pollution.

The upcoming 2008 legislative session is an exciting opportunity to make global warming solutions a reality in our state. Futurewise will be leading efforts to pass the “Local Solutions to Global Warming” bill aimed at addressing land use impacts on global warming. This bill adds a goal of reducing global warming pollution to the Growth Management Act (GMA) and identifies global warming reduction as an important aspect of comprehensive planning – and it’s one of the environmental community’s Priorities for a Healthy Washington.
Land use is at heart a local issue and actions to address land use contributions to global warming must be taken at the state and local levels. Luckily Washington has already taken steps to manage growth and development through the adoption of the Growth Management Act. "Local Solutions to Global Warming" aims to use our existing land use infrastructure to address land use impacts on global warming.
This one single action will create a ripple effect in cities and counties across the state as they look at opportunities to do the right thing now to ensure reductions in global warming.
