Local Food Web Map

Let's amass some local food web information so we can help support our local farmers and cut down on food miles. Please contribute any new or updated information and I'll edit this first post so it's all in one place. If you have a favorite farmer or CSA, chime in and we'll get them on the list.

Cheese-
*******
Ballard Family Dairy and Cheese, 1764 South 2100 East, Gooding. Award-winning local cheeses. Available through Idaho's Bounty. Also at the Boise Farmer's market. Apparently WinCo in Boise sells their cheese curds and you may be able to get their products through boisemilk.com home delivery service. These folks are 100 miles away. Pasturized.
***New- Boise COop now carrying some of Ballard's cheeses. Finally! Price example: Idaho White Cheddar@10.99/lb

Morning Owl Farm raises ducks for eggs and also has a CSA/Farmstead. Check out their website at morningowlfarm.com They are also offering molting ducks which should return to laying for you in a couple of months. Duck eggs are supposedly available at Boise Consumer Coop, but I don't know this for sure.

Organic Garden Starts-
*****************
Canyon Bounty Farm, 13376 Orchard Ave., Nampa. Beth has awesome garden starts for sale in the spring. Her website should be updated in the next couple of weeks with what she'll be offering this year.

Wheat-
*******
Canyon Bounty Farm, 13376 Orchard Ave., Nampa. Hard red winter wheat. $2.50/lb for fresh ground and $2/lb for whole grain. Beth has started growing this crop on a small scale, so the prices aren't what the bigger producers can offer. But Beth grew it right down the road from us. Yay! Call Beth at 463-1878 for pickup/delivery options.

I call them directly, but

I call them directly, but they've got this phone screening system where if they don't know your name, you might not get a call back. So I'd send them an e-mail at sswm@netzero.net and tell them what you're after. They definitely sell eggs during the winter (they tried to get me to take 8 dozen the last time I was there, LOL!) as well as dog food made my a veterinarian in Twin Falls. While their potatoes and onions hold out from the last growing season, they'll sell those too. I'm not sure whether they stock their beans into the next year or what.

I'm definitely going to have to pick up some of Beth's ground wheat when I go to get my plant starts...

We get our eggs from Steve &

We get our eggs from Steve & Wendy at Spyglass Gardens, which is off Linder & Victory in Meridian. They're $2.75/dozen and are good, brown eggs. The chickens are rescue birds, so they were not initially raised organically, though I believe they now are.

Spyglass is really great--they have tons of produce in season, and they have told me that they don't get anything from farther than 100 miles away, with the exception of Hermiston apples. All the stuff they grow on-site (leafy greens, peppers, carrots, strawberries, tomatoes, and lots more) is not certified, but is grown organically. They also have beans, salsas, honey, huckleberries...lots of great stuff!

Thanks for the info Casey.
I visited their website and it listed them being open from April - October. Do they have stuff for sale in the winter months? If so, what's the best way to reach them during this time?
