What does a 'locavore' eat? It depends where you live! We are seeing a national movement towards the Locavore Diet, sourcing one's diet exclusively from the local region, following in the footsteps of movements overseas such as the 100-mile diet in the US and UK. Some are even doing the one-block diet! We are very fortunate in Bundaberg to be in the "salad bowl" of QLD, with a huge variety of fresh produce grown here. Nelson Brown, manager of Bundaberg Marketplace Fruits said yesterday, "There's no reason to not eat local."
On September 1st, Jodie Van De Wetering of ABC Wide Bay Radio began the Locavore Challenge as part of a National challenge, using a 160km radius as a guideline. You can read about her experiences here.
ABC Wide Bay Radio is not only conducting and promoting the Locavore Challenge but also asking listeners to send in local recipes to create a Wide Bay Cookbook. Stay tuned to the ABC Wide Bay website for updates.
Next Monday the 15th of September, I'll start the Locavore Challenge. I'm committing to take the challenge strictly for at least two weeks, to find out exactly how easy it would be if we had no other option but local. But it's up to you how strictly to do the challenge. You may decide to eat bread and pasta that's made locally, even though not all ingredients are grown locally. You set your level of participation and time frame.
Are you interested in joining the Locavore Challenge? Call 4196 0043 or email jacqui@sustainabundy.org to register or find out more.
Stay tuned for the Locavore Source Reference List, to be added soon.

Fixed locavore map link
Hi Jacqui!
Thanks for posting this - I just tweaked the link hyperlink to the locavore map (the 'http://' was missing so it was pointing to a broken link).
In case anyone missed it, here it is in full - http://www.abc.net.au/local/features/locavore/?section=myplace
Cheers,
Shelby
