Group Coordinator Newsletter - January 2006

Post Carbon Institute
Learning to live in a low energy world

Dear Post Carbon Group Coordinators,

The Relocalization Network is growing everyday, and is now composed of over 70 groups in 8 countries. Over the coming year it is our intention to gather information from groups and affiliates and make the Network much more accessible to individuals and Local Post Carbon Groups. At this stage, the Relocalization Network consists of a wide variety of different groups ranging from groups that are just starting out to groups that are currently working to implement long-term planning strategies for relocalizing their communities and regions. We are working to provide support for groups within the network, and as we ourselves are learning and growing, we greatly appreciate your continuing feedback on the types of resources and support that Post Carbon Institute can make available to you. Please follow this link to let us know what your comments and suggestions are: www.postcarbon.org/feedback.

Website Redesign

Relocalize.net

We are currently working with Mack Hardy, our fabulous chief programmer, to redesign the entire Post Carbon website including Relocalize.net. We are working to establish relocalize.net as an independent website that can also be accessed through the main Post Carbon website. Each group will have its own website, featuring customizable layouts and drop down menus. This transition will happen over the next few weeks as we start to move all of our content to the new design.

New Relocalization Network Interactive Map

Jim Zack, Coordinator of Sustainable Saratoga Springs in New York, has graciously provided his graphic design services to help us put together an interactive map of groups in the Relocalization Network. You can now view the gateway map at http://www.postcarbon.org/relocalize/network, which leads to other more detailed maps. Each point (orange dot) is linked the group website on Relocalize.net

Toolkits

We have two new marvelous interns, Brendan McEwen, an Environmental Sciences student at UBC, and Sarah McClay, a former staff member of the Friends of the Earth fundraising department. Brendan and Sarah are currently putting together a number of toolkits for groups to use as resource materials for educational outreach and fundraising.

These toolkits will soon be available and will be continually expanded and improved as we gather more information, so stay tuned!

Fundraising toolkit preview:

  • Fundraising 101

  • Templates which will serve as "how to" examples

    • Template funding proposal

    • Sample information to collect about donors

    • Sample thank you letter & card

  • Resources: useful books & courses

Outpost Coordinator Noodle Bar

For those of you who have not yet visited the 'Outpost Coordinator Noodle Bar', I would encourage you to do so and get in touch with other Coordinators in the Network. You will see the link to it listed under the Relocalization Network link in your personal box at the top right of the screen. It will appear with the other group(s) to which you are members of, only it will be hidden to the public.

Again, I am generally here in the Vancouver office three afternoons a week, as I am still currently a full-time student at the University of British Columbia. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to email me or call our office in 604-708-8404.

All the best,

Shelby
