Dear Local Post Carbon Group Coordinators,
It seems that every month goes by so quickly. It is already June and we are sending out another Group Coordinator Newsletter. Time passes fast when you're busy and we are excited to share with you what we have been working on.
Also, please feel free to forward this newsletter to anyone who you think may be interested in reading our monthly publication, especially other group members. We have also now made the Coordinator Newsletters public on the new website under the main menu News > Newsletters.
Please feel free to forward this newsletter to anyone, especially your other group members, who you think may be interested.
Do you have a good idea for the name of the monthly Local Post Carbon Group Coordinator Newsletter? Please send ideas to us via the contact form with “Name That Newsletter” in the subject line.
The Relocalization Network has just signed on the 100th Local Post Carbon Group, Big Sur Powerdown. This California Group coordinated by Linda Parker, held their first meeting on May 19th. The event was a huge success, with over 70 people in attendance. Their next meeting will be held on June 23rd at 7:00m at the Henry Millar Library in Big Sur. Julian Darley, founder of Post Carbon Institute, and Jerry Mander (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Mander )will be speaking.
We would also like to welcome Ian Dunlop and the Otago Sustainability Network in Otago New Zealand to the Relocalization Network.
Over the past month, we have been working on a comprehensive Relocalization Network Information Package and Application process for all potential new Local Post Carbon Groups.
We felt it was important for potential Groups to have clear information about the Relocalization Network and about what to expect as a member the Network. This information is also helpful for existing Groups that are part of the Relocalization Network, as it clearly outlines the long-term and short-term goals, vision and mission of the Relocalization Network. It is important for each member of the Relocalization Network to have the same understanding of how and why they are part of the Network.
The Application has been designed to help Local Groups start thinking about what the goals are for their Group, and to help them get a better understanding of their community and regional needs. It is also a tool for us to get to know a little about the Groups and their regions so that we can find areas of needed support and develop points of collaboration. It also gives us a good opportunity to learn a little bit about the skills and experiences that new Groups can share with other Groups in the Relocalization Network.
If you have any questions or comments about the contents of this information package please email us.
The Relocalization Network website has undergone one of the first of many changes that it will undergo in the next couple of months.
www.relocalize.net is now a separate site from www.postcarbon.org . The new website features a customized menu bar, more streamlined information and updated content. Please take a moment to have a look. We are happy to receive feedback by email. The website will continue to evolve over the next couple of months, so stay tuned for more new features and content.
Over the past year there has been a significant shift toward civic level government acknowledgement of peak oil and its pending impact on cities. In Europe, cities and national governments are re-thinking planning policies in order to prepare for a post oil economy.
In the USA there are four metropolitan areas, including San Francisco, California; Portland, Oregon; Bloomington, Indiana and Franklin, New York, that have passed or are in the process of passing Peak Oil Resolutions. These Resolutions acknowledge the threats posed by peak oil and call for the establishment of city-wide studies to assess city and municipal vulnerabilities to peak oil.
Due to the activism of Portland Peak Oil, a Local Post Carbon Group, the Portland City Council passed a resolution on May 10th, 2006 that will see the creation of a task force to investigate the city-wide implications of peak oil.
For more information please view the press release or the Portland website
Peak Moment: Community Responses to a Changing Energy Future is a weekly 30 minute program series emphasizing positive responses to energy decline through local community action. The program’s producers want to spread the word about relocalization efforts across North America and the world through your community's public access (CATV) or educational TV station. It's easy to do, but most CATV stations need a local person to submit programs. Peak Moment is currently airing on about six community-access TV stations. Will you submit the show to your local TV station for your community?
Recent episodes include interviews with Post Carbon's Celine Rich and Julian Darley, and with Gary Gardner of Worldwatch Institute. Upcoming episodes will feature the Powerdown Project, Willets Economic LocaLization (WELL), and Guy Dauncey, author of Stormy Weather: 101 Solutions to Global Climate Change.
Several episodes are available online on Global Public Media. The show is hosted by Janaia Donaldson, directed by Robyn Mallgren, and produced by Yuba Gals Independent Media for Alliance for a Post-Petroleum Local Economy, APPLE of Nevada County, California.

The May 20th Bay Area Post Carbon Network meeting brought together 27 representatives from San Francisco Bay area Local Post Carbon Groups and other affiliate Groups for a five hour networking potluck lunch. Julian Darley, Celine Rich and Laura Bonenfant from Post Carbon Institute also attended the event. The meeting was an excellent opportunity for Groups to share successful practices and to mentor newer Groups.
The morning session focused on introducing each Group while in the afternoon the Groups participated in short break out sessions on topics related to the Relocalization effort in the Bay Area communities.
Deborah Lindsay, one of the coordinators of the event, urges Groups to “please consider joining forces with local allies, whether they are other Post Carbon Groups or simply organizations working toward similar goals. We are stronger when we work together and we have so much wisdom to share.”
If you'd like to know more about the Bay Area Post Carbon Network, feel free to contact Deborah Lindsay at decal@deborahlindsay.com.
The next meeting will take place Saturday, September 16th, 10:30 am to 5 pm, Potrero Hill Community Center, San Francisco, CA.
Do you have an event you would like to share with the Network? Please send an email to Sarah and Shelby by email before the last week of the month and we will include it in the monthly newsletter.
