April 14th Call to Action

With mere days before the April 14th Step It Up Campaign for action on global warming coming to a head across North America, tens of thousands of participants are gearing up for their planned events. Among the groups in the Relocalization Network who are participating in the campaign are APPLE Nevada, CA, Boise Sustainable Living Community, IH, and the Earth Charter Lifeboat Academy, PA. If your group is participating in the campaign, let us know! We will feature your actions in the next Relocalize newsletter.

Global Public Media, an initiative of Post Carbon Institute, is an internet broadcasting station that streams long format audio and video interviews with world experts. Click on the links below for the latest additions on GPM.

Richard Bell, Post Carbon Institute Communications Director, has a suite of articles on energy and climate change from Washington DC:

Grant Funding Opportunity

Founded in New York in 1947, the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation accepts grant proposals to promote a sustainable agricultural and food system. The Foundation supports rural and urban organizations that:

  • Work with farmers and consumers on issues involving sustainable agriculture and community food security;
  • Advocate for governmental policies and funding allocations that advance sustainable agriculture and community food security; and
  • Counter the actions of public and private sector institutions and corporations that further the concentration of food production and the industrialization of agriculture.
  • To apply, send the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation a letter of inquiry (maximum 3 pages in length). Letters are reviewed on a continuous basis. For more information please visit www.noyes.org.

    Feature Article: Op-Ed by Lance Meredith

    This month's feature article was submitted by Lance Meredith of the Chatham-Kent Oil Age Planning Group in Chatham-Kent, Ontario, Canada. The article was published as an op-ed in the Chatham Daily News. The following is an excerpt from the article (click on the link to read the full article):

    Oil is still cheap, at 65 dollars a barrel it works out to about 10 cents a cup (quarter litre) - try and buy water, pop, milk, or juice for that price. Further, a cup of oil contains the equavalent of about 30 hours of hard physical labour - you could never hire someone for that rate of pay! The bottom line is, don't blame the retailer. We're all in this boat together and if we're going to cope with this energy predicament, as community we will have to draw upon our own creativity, resources and each other.
