Janaia Donaldson recaps Peak Moment TV On the Road

Last summer, we supported Janaia Donaldson and Robyn Mallgren of Peak Moment TV on their journey across the West Coast of North America visiting communities and interviewing local experts. One year later, Janaia reflects on the trip and outlines next steps. Read the full entry on Janaia's blog.

"We smiled and felt a twinge of longing to be back on the road, remembering how we wound our way through Oregon, Washington and British Columbia videotaping more than 80 programs organized by relocalization group coordinators and supported by the Relocalization Network. This blog chronicled that journey.

Back home producing a Peak Moment Conversation program each week, we are revisiting many people and places we taped. There's Sharon Abreu and Michael Hurwicz singing about the End of Oil, and Errol and Kathleen demonstrating the hand tools at Smith and Speed Mercantile (Orcas Island)..." Read more

Post Carbon Cities: Preview the guidebook for local governments

Portions of Post Carbon Cities: Planning for Energy and Climate Uncertainty, our new guidebook for local governments, are now available for free download! Visit www.postcarboncities.net/guidebook to download this special promotional version of the guidebook, which includes the Executive Summary, the Introduction, a guide to making a local government statement on peak oil, and a guide to establishing a peak oil task force.

As energy and climate change become increasingly important issues for businesses and citizens, Post Carbon Cities comes not a moment too soon for local leaders who want to know more about these unprecedented challenges. Renowned urbanist James Howard Kunstler (author of The Long Emergency and The Geography of Nowhere) has this to say about the Guidebook:

"Post Carbon Cities is an exceptionally clear and comprehensive call-to-action to those who actually work in the trenches of city governance. We don't have any more time to waste getting ready for an energy-scarcer future, and for those who remain dazed and confused, this book is an excellent place to start."

Pre-ordering for the hard copy version of the guidebook (US$30) will be available shortly at our online store. Watch www.postcarboncities.net/guidebook for updated information.

Book of the month: Deep Economy by Bill McKibben

Each month, we feature a relevant article, usually highlighting the work of groups in the Relocalization Network. This month, we've decided to try something new, and feature a chosen book: Deep Economy by Bill McKibben, well-known author, educator and environmentalist. Bill McKibben has done a lot of work over the years towards communicating the need for environmental awareness and change. He recently headed up the hugely successful Step It Up campaign on April 14, 2007, which brought together thousands of people across the United States to send a message to the U.S. Congress to take action on climate change. He has been a huge supporter of building strong an vibrant local economies and has helped promote the work of the Relocalization Network. We invite you to pick up the book and log on to relocalize.net and post your review and discuss the book in the online forums.
