Learning is a lifelong process and there are many educational programs delivered in a variety of different forms depending on your interests and learning style.

September brings a new cycle for institutional learning with kindergarten to secondary to post-secondary students returning in waves, and this month we're focusing on opportunities for groups and individuals to steer their learning towards topics on relocalization and re-skilling our communities.

1. Education & Relocalization

Sustainable Methow Classroom in BloomCommunity-based education is at the crux of relocalization and learning about local adaptations for boosting self-reliance and overall community resilience. There are many examples of the "Great Re-Skilling" that is taking place around the world as more and more are people taking an interest in knowing how to produce the things they need themselves and as a community, through activities ranging from food preservation to small-scale energy production.

Relocalize.net feature project - In Twisp, Washington, Partnership for a Sustainable Methow is actively building on their mission, "to initiate, encourage and support activities that foster long-term sustainability and well-being in the Methow Valley community." Two of their programs include Classroom in Bloom and The Local Source, a directory of local skills, goods and services to help relocalize the community.

2. Boulder Transition Training Recap

On September 13-14, more than 60 people from several states across the U.S. gathered in Boulder, Colorado for the first official Transition training session in North America. The training session was hosted by Transition Boulder County, members of which formed the original Boulder Valley Relocalization group who were one of the first groups to join relocalize.net.

"The training, conducted by Transition Boulder County co-founders Michael Brownlee and Lynette Marie Hanthorn, was originally developed to support nascent relocalization initiatives in the Boulder-Denver area, but was opened up to accommodate others who are interested in bringing Transition to their communities."

3. Outdoor Classrooms: A New Handbook for School Gardens

Outdoor Classrooms: a handbook for school gardens is a bright, teacher-friendly, beautifully illustrated reference to entice the reader and the dreamer to enliven children's school life with outdoor learning adventures.

Written by Carolyn Nuttall and Janet Millington, the book is filled with start-up information for the school that is looking to extend learning opportunities in the outdoors.

There are lesson plans, curriculum links, permaculture solutions and a section called Elementals which covers the essential learnings in garden-based education for sustainability.

American Planning Association, Fall Conference
November 7, 2008 - Salt Lake City, UT
Daniel Lerch, Post Carbon Cities Program Manager, will present at the Utah Chapter of the American Planning Association, Fall Conference. The meeting will be held at University of Utah.

The Conference on Michigan's Future - Energy, Economy & Environment
November 14-16, 2008 - Crystal Mountain Resort, Thompsonville, MI
Richard Heinberg, Post Carbon Institute Senior Fellow, will speak at the Conference on Michigan's Future: Energy, Economy and Environment, which will look at how rising oil and energy costs are crippling Michigan's economy and proposes solutions to prepare Michigan for the economy of tomorrow.
