What I appreciate about this article is -
a. The tagline about how "The ‘When’ Doesn’t Matter" -- a message that is repeated at the end of the article (and at the end of the exerpts quoted here)
b. How the article clearly communicates the concept of world peak oil. (See the start of the exerpts below.)

Birol is leading a groundbreaking reassessment of the worldwide outlook for oil supplies, investment and production that many believe will deliver bad news when it is released in November.

"Tyson Slocum, director of the energy program at Public Citizen, a Washington-based consumer group, doesn’t care when the peak will come.

'We should be planning as though we’re there,' he said, 'because from a national interest standpoint, from an economic standpoint and from an environmental standpoint, our dependence on oil, whether it comes from California or Saudi Arabia, is unsustainable.'"

The rest of the article is OK.
It's misleading, however, when the author suggests that there isn't extensive analysis and documentation to back up concerns about impending or present world peak oil.

The Sydney Outpost of the Post Carbon Institute will be showing "The End of Suburbia" on January 18 2006 at 7 pm and on January 26 2006 at 7.30 pm.

Location The McConnell Memorial Library on Falmouth Street in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Afterwards there will be discussion, and free handouts.

The new "general release" movie "Syriana" has not yet come to Sydney, and this dvd is being advertised as giving background information to "Syriana".

Now that CBC is back, I have had the opportunity to hear quite a few items on the radio about peak oil.

It is interesting that the general population is getting the feeling that they need to use less oil and gasoline - but do they really know why?

The three facts that are not being presented in a straight forward way by the government, big business and the media are:

1) Demand for oil is exceeding the supply.

2) Approximately half the oil in the world has
been used up.

3) Since the time that oil was first discovered and
used, the population of the world has grown

Over the past year or so I have arranged showings of the DVD "The End of Suburbia" in public libraries etc.(see the event listings for the past month or two on this site)

I seem to be taking a little break at the moment.

The DVD will be shown at Cape Breton University on
Thursday November 24 - not sure of the time. (For info email Evan Coole evan_coole@hotmail.com)

Also this month a United Church Minister is going to show the DVD to her church committee and they may show it to another group.....

I am waiting to hear if a library in Richmond County will partner with the Sydney Outpost to show the DVD...
