Overview
Willits Economic LocaLization (WELL) started in late 2004 following a series of viewings of "The End of Suburbia" and hours of public dialogue concerning "what to do."
Since then, about 60 people have regularly attended bi-weekly meetings at the Willits Community Center. The participants have established various working groups to study the current systems that sustain our livelihoods, envision low energy and resource use alternatives, and plan for this transition. WELL has also organized a speaker series that has built awareness and provided ideas for action.
Many people are changing their own habits and lifestyles due to this awareness, and forming action groups for small projects. Whether this translates into large-scale change is yet to be seen, although Willits is inspiring other communities in the County to create similar organizations. Big changes often begin small.
