Climate change is the most serious issue facing humanity and the planet.

The Climate Change Roadshow is an opportunity to learn more about what we can do to effect positive change.

Therapists for Social Responsibility (TSR) is hosting this important local event.

Kelly Tudhope, an environmental activist from New Zealand, will be leading the discussion.

These multi-media presentations will help communities to understand our role in a "climate changed" world and empower us with a renewed sense of commitment to the actions required to address global warming.

Discussion revolved around Jeff's draft to be published in our local newspapers. Muriel's response was well thought out and direct and available online. Earl's ideas for a film series is great and will I'm sure
result in a public showing within a month or two. Gary's description of solar swamp coolers intrigued us all to want to "see" more. Michael's demonstration of solar ovens was inspiring and a concrete step we can take now to reduce energy use without compromise of standard of living. We look forward to our September meeting and preplanning for the next "Earth Day"

I think this boat is a brilliant idea. I hope we start seeing these in lakes around California. It seems like a very quiet and low impact way to take people on cruises even in very sensitive areas.

I never imagined we were to the point where we could cross the atlantic by solar powered boat. I like the idea of cruising across the sea in the horse latitudes while surfing the internet. How long would it take to get to San Francisco on one of these if you're traveling 5-6 knots?

Great post Matt- I agree a symposium in Sac would be a worthwhile event - a couple of random items- two good websites I've come across lately communitysolutions.org and powerofcommunity.org. Also I was at a fundraiser for a local congressman last week that was sparsley attended so I had a lot of time to talk to him . He is on the Global Warming committee and head of the science committee (he's a scientist not a lawyer)he admitted he was aware of Peak Oil as a phenominum and a Senator who's name he couldn't remember talks about peak oil all the time - other than that there doesn't seem to be much awareness(let alone any plans) on the federal level that will come along soon to a save the day -on a local or community level I think we're it -

Human Power Generation...

Article below is about a Gym experimenting with human power generation.

One of the personal reasons I can't stand to exercise is that it's so worthless...

If I could make all that sweat GOOD for something, then I'd be more likely to do something about it! (It's why I like to bicycle or just work in the yard for exercise. I think at least SOME other people feel this way, too???) Maybe this is a good way to motivate all those extra American pounds into kilowatt hours??? I can see future post-oil community centers with solar panels and/or wind generators and an "exercise salon" where you could also check your Email, charge your laptop or phone while you "workout"?
If your home energy generation is too expensive or inaccessible, this could be a viable future -- or maybe everyone will be busy and slim enough riding their bikes to get around and working on those backyard gardens? Of course -- need to set up the infrastructure while gas is still under $100 a barrel...

Good to meet those of you who I hadn't met until last night. Im excited as we move forward to both influence community (in)action and continue with my own evolution towards a smaller eco-footprint. June SPAN meeting welcomed four new memebers , much enthusiasm and activity.
In general we decided to work with local government officials to help inform and influence public policy to include post oil considerations.
We decided to approach the local media (BEE,Sac News and Review) to cover Peak Oil as a newsworthy topic on an ongoing basis. We vowed to read the relocalize website and use the blog to maintain between meeting correspondance. We passed out a member survey to determine mutual goals and interests in moving forward.
Pizza,beer and cherries were shared and we look forward to meeeting in July

Hey all. Great meeting and wonderful meeting everyone. I wanted to let you know about the blog I have been maintaining which is about my transition to a more sustainable way of life. So far I've done the cheap stuff and the expensive stuff will have to come later little by little. The good news is a lot can be done at the beginning for not so much money which is something we have to tell people about. My blog is:

The latest entry is about solar canning of pie cherries. In the next few weeks I want to process at least four quarts of sour cherries of the montmorency cultivar. This season is very short so I can't wait to get some aside. I have solar-canned 5.5 quarts of the chelan cultivar already this year but they are not the same as the sour cherries. I asked the woman at market at the uc davis master canners table and she said she uses a solar cooker for canning too. I tend to be generous with the heat using this process and it's important to follow directions carefully for safety's sake.

I'm glad solar cooking seemed interesting to everyone because I've found it to be a fun thing and a convenience. Like I said you prep a little in the morning and then have dinner ready when you get home from work. People have to know that post-carbon living is good for your soul and very fun as well. Lasagne and meatloaf come out really tasty in it, lentils, garbanzo beans, rice cook through perfectly without sitting on a stove all day. There are really good recipe books out there.

Solar cooking also allows cooking of things in the oven in summer without having to take the heat back out of your house via air conditioning. You can have beans cooking in the solar oven all day to go with a barbecue. Anyway there are so many great things you can do with it that I'm surprised there isn't one in every Sacramento house. We the people of the United States of America declare war on Peak Oil and Global warming.

Article One: By the year 2015 all buildings in the USA must have Photovoltaic and Thermal solar systems.

Article Two: Multiple the funding for mass transit by a factor of One hundred immediately.

Article Three: Decommission all coal fire plants by 2020.

Article Four: Increase CAFE requirements 1 mile per gallon per year for the next 90 years.

Article Five: Allow Nuclear power plants to be built, with the first plant to be built on the site of the Three Mile Island meltdown and then all future plants to be built on existing Nuclear Sites.

Article Six: Increase transportation fuel tax by $1.00 to pay for the above.

Article Seven: Stop all suburban sprawl. Infill only.

There was a well thought out presentation for the group to help us all figure out what exactly we want to use SPAN to do. Of course nothing was accomplished since there were no participants but on the 4th we hope to have a second chance!

I attended Earth Day at CSUS this last Sunday....let me give everyone a brief description of what went down.

Relocalize Sacramento (formerly: Sustainable Sacramento) had a booth where they were giving away plants for gardens...and passing out literaure on Oil Depletion, etc. Nice people. Seems like there was a lot of overlap with our group...maybe we should consider cooperating some how. they are. www.relocalizesacramento.org

Also there was a community gardening booth put on by Sacramento Area Community Garden Coalition. They may contact at 916 508-6025 or sacgc@ulink.net They're the people behind getting the front yard garden passed (took them 3 years i guess) there is also a grand opening of the fremont community garden on Sat, June 9th at 14 and Q from 10-2. plots are already full but there is a waiting list...

Also for those wondering the Sustainability Panel that was supposed to happen on the day before, never did happen.

Sacramento's SPAN recently met to discuss recent triumphs( city council passed a sustainable gardening ordinance) difussion of information (use relocalize.net) and other concerns. DVD's were shared (Crude Impact, End of Suburbia, Loose Change) as well as pertinant articles and books. We had several mambers commit to helping with our sister counterparton sustainability at Earth Day and supported one of our member who is a trained Al Gore presenter for Inconveient Truth in his activities. We started the idea of holding a Post Carbon Day to ask volunteers to live a day without the use of any oil or byproduct. We are also discussing Energy Impact protocal for our city to implement.
