Co-op Purchase of Low-Energy Fridges?

Looking into the post-carbon future, I ask myself: what is really essential? Food, water and sewage treatment top my list. Refrigeration is the very next thing. Without a refrigerator, much of my home-grown and hard-won food will go to waste! Refrigeration: GOOD! Spoiled food: BAD! Unfortunately, in most households, the refrigerator is the single biggest energy consuming kitchen appliance. So, what to do?

This morning I've been researching energy-efficient refrigeration options. It occurs to me that bulk purchase of refrigerators could bring the cost down. If outposts within reasonable driving distance of one another were to combine their purchasing power, they might achieve significant cost savings. In fact, as "The Post Carbon Institute" we might be able to broker a deal for all outpost members and others who are interested. Please contact me at the Sacramento Post-carbon Action Network (SPAN) if you are interested in forming a work group around this topic.

Sacramento Post-carbon Action Network (SPAN)

Compost Supply in Sacramento

Does anyone know where I can buy compost in Sacramento cheaply? I've checked rates for compost at local soil and rock yards...prices are $19-25/yd. I heard from somebody (can't remember who) that the green waste disposal program has cheap (~$5/yd) compost for sale. I don't know if it's true...I checked some city and county websites and found no information for compost supply and my calls to thier offices have not been returned as of 4/4...sooo... if anyone knows anything, that would be a great help! thanks

Sacramento Post-carbon Action Network (SPAN)

Where is everybody?

So we had a meeting on the 14th and nobody except Jeff showed up. Where is everybody?

Well for those of you that are still interested, the next meeting will be June 4th at 6pm. Pizza and beer will be provided ( is that a good enough bribe?)

There was a well thought out presentation for the group to help us all figure out what exactly we want to use SPAN to do. Of course nothing was accomplished since there were no participants but on the 4th we hope to have a second chance!

Please bring your interest, energy and maybe a friend or two. This will be fun I promise. A chance to share our ideas and hopes for the Sacramento area.

Sacramento Post-carbon Action Network (SPAN)

Meeting minutes for SPAN June meeting

June SPAN meeting welcomed four new memebers , much enthusiasm and activity.
In general we decided to work with local government officials to help inform and influence public policy to include post oil considerations.
We decided to approach the local media (BEE,Sac News and Review) to cover Peak Oil as a newsworthy topic on an ongoing basis. We vowed to read the relocalize website and use the blog to maintain between meeting correspondance. We passed out a member survey to determine mutual goals and interests in moving forward.
Pizza, beer and cherries were shared and we look forward to meeeting in July
August meeting report

Discussion revolved around Jeff's draft to be published in our local newspapers. Muriel's response was well thought out and direct and available online. Earl's ideas for a film series is great and will I'm sure
result in a public showing within a month or two. Gary's description of solar swamp coolers intrigued us all to want to "see" more. Michael's demonstration of solar ovens was inspiring and a concrete step we can take now to reduce energy use without compromise of standard of living. We look forward to our September meeting and preplanning for the next "Earth Day"
Humbly submitted
Are there any SPAN meetings planned for the future?

Hi, I recently moved to Sacramento, and I am interested in plugging into sustainability-related stuff happening around. Are there any events of this group planned for the future?
Happy new year,
