Some of you are aware that ASPO-USA will be holding their annual peak oil conference in Sacramento this year, from September 21st - 23rd. Last year's conference was really quite comprehensive. See last year's list of speakers on the ASPO-USA website.

I have done some preliminary checking on pricing and came up with the following:

All the above costs are, or course, subject to revision, either up or down. If enough people want to go (10 or more) then we could potentially negotiate group rates to obtain discounts.

Photographer David Strongman from Vancouver, BC will be in Portland sometime after the 23rd of July. He would like to meet people from the local Post Carbon group to get their ideas of what relocalization means.

This is also a chance to learn what other groups are doing.

Relocalization events

The Routes of Relocalization Early this June, photographer David Strongman contacted Post Carbon Institute and the Relocalization Network with an idea to travel south on his motorcycle from Vancouver, BC and explore the Northwestern United States, tracing the routes of the Relocalization strategy. Equipped with his cameras, tape recorder and a tent, David proposed a journey to document this expanding network of concerned, conscientious individuals. His intention is to visit the Local Post Carbon Groups and photograph the faces and places of the Network. With a focus on issues of food and the importance of community in a Carbon strained world he will conduct interviews and encourage a dialogue about Relocalization. We wanted to hear more … I’m interested in the vulnerability of North America’s food economy and the price the environment pays on such a carbon heavy transportation network. The insecurity of a global food market is an issue we need to address now. Not tomorrow when the price of Oil grips the transportation industry, and we are left without produce and a plan. When the price of produce, like gasoline, starts to rise as a result of a global shortage of oil, it will be these communities that have started developing Relocalization strategies who will be able to share their experiences about how to peacefully transition from a carbon based economy, to one that explores cleaner, community oriented solutions. With over 100 Local Groups in 10 countries, David’s idea comes at a time when the Relocalization Network is growing and interest about the initiative is escalating. Media as a vehicle for learning and outreach has become increasingly important to the Network. To have David out in the field researching the issues, interviewing the members of the Network and photographing the Relocalization landscape is a fantastic opportunity for us to share with the world the excitement of this growing momentum. I’ll be leaving from Vancouver July 15th for two months with my first stop in Bellingham WA. I hope to visit as many communities as possible on the way to San Diego. With the help of Post Carbon Institute I’ll be contacting Local Groups and setting up meetings where I’ll visit with members to photograph and discuss Relocalization.
