Greetings. This group was formed December 22nd, 2005 in the interest of looking at ways to make our community both more self-sufficient and citizen-centered. Realizing that our natural endowment of cheap fuel is finite and demand is now exceeding supply, we are faced with the challenge of re-inventing our community and making a more livable arrangement.

SSS Kickoff Party Recap

The first event for Sustainable Saratoga Springs was held last Sunday (26 March 2006) at Jim and Frenchy's house. Ten people were present for the potluck and seven remained for the screening of Rhinoceros. There was lively discussion during the potluck and after the movie.

An interesting point was raised by Steve G. regarding the term "Relocalization." He felt that the reflective prefix ("re-") downplays those localization efforts that aren't a reversion to some previous state of a more local socio-economic structure. I agree in part, but also say that the outward expression of many of our localization efforts might look similar to some previous state of human habitation. I refer primarily to the landuse patterns, re-introduction of more appropriate technologies (including non-mechanized farm implements, draft animals, windmills, etc), and the daily and seasonal rhythms of our lives. By all means however, there is no way we want to go back to the levels of pollution, unsanitary conditions, and wasteful practices that characterized life in the not-so-distant past. But I'm rambling, and that's what blog space is for...

"The Future of Food" documentary is coming to Saratoga Springs (again)!

There will be two separate screenings of Deborah Koons Garcia's hard-hitting documentary:

Saratoga Film Forum special event (with buffet and panel discussion), Saturday, May 20th, 7pm to 10pm

Free screening in the Susman Room of the Saratoga Springs Public Library, Tuesday, June 6th, 6:30 to 9pm

I saw this documentary at Reel Meals last fall, and it was incredible! This is a must see for anyone who eats food that comes from a store or a farm.

A preview of how the local and natural food community can network together will be presented live at Saratoga Film Forum Sat night, May 20th.

This local theatre is screening The Future of Food, the grassroots favorite which everyone is talking about, and two local natural food establishments, Four Seasons and Honest Weight Food Coop, are donating a menu that is as non-genetically engineered and local as possible, on cutlery and dinnerware that is bio-degradable. Local baker Adam Witt is donating bread.
