APPLE-Elgin on CBS radio: The Osgood Files

On Friday June 16, California radio producer Ben Trefny interviewed me about APPLE-Elgin and our current major project, the community garden, which is our humble first step toward local food production. Earlier in the week ha had interviewed Julian Darley. Ben is editing the tapes and when the feature is complete, it will air on CBS' The Osgood Files, to be broadcast over 400 radio stations across the country.

This coming Friday, 6/23, I finally get an audience with state representative Ruth Munson. She has twice ignored my engagements with her -- e.g., said she would be at the January peak oil workshop and then simply did not show. I am not going to waste time being mad at her when we meet; rather, I aim to show her evidence of other states', counties' & cities' preparedness, and urge her to get Illinois on board. There are now too many examples to ignore and they are not all in California! Tompkins County, New York, and the State of Vermont, are just two examples of entities with published documentation indicating that the demand for oil WILL soon outstrip the supply, and proactive defensive measures are no longer negotiable.

How to measure behavioral change?

Hello everyone,

In the fall I'll be teaching a "break petroleum dependence" class at Elgin Community College (Illinois). I'd love to do a pre-test/post-test to measure students' behavioral change, i.e., in what ways and to what degree they are making the transition away from oil. The findings might help us identify what teaching strategies are most effective in getting members of the general public to use less petroleum.

Does such an inventory already exist? If so, please send me a signal

LETS program: a sustainable local economy

At the January 11th workshop, participants encouraged the development of a "very local" yellow pages (although named a green pages). When we need goods & services, we can patronize one another's small businesses. If/when the economy goes south, we will be better off if we support each other rather than "big box" stores. Then at the January 29th workshop, participants eagerly latched onto the LETS idea:

LOCAL VIPS TO ATTEND 1/29 WORKSHOP

STATE REPRESENTATIVE RUTH MUNSON and DUNDEE TOWNSHIP SUPERVISOR SUE HARNEY have both said they will attend the "Lessons from Stelle" workshop on 1/29. This is our chance to voice our concerns to political leaders in person, so kindly attend if at all possible! Also, Illinois Attorney General LISA MADIGAN cannot be there due to other commitments, *however*, she is checking among her staff to see who can attend on her behalf. Please vote with your feet and bring a friend!

â€¢ Workshops. On January 11, 19 people learned the basics of peak oil, looked at other community models (e.g., Kinsale, Stelle), and came up with ideas to implement right here at home. What if every school had a garden? What if the students tended the garden, and enjoyed the fruits (and vegetables) thereof? NOTE: This workshop repeats on Sunday, January 29th. RSVP at

Lessons from Stelle: Tapping into our Community Strength to Break Petroleum Dependence

"Lessons from Stelle: Tapping into our Community Strength to Break Petroleum Dependence" is an interactive presentation. We will cover the basics of peak oil, models of other communities' re-localization, and lots of ways we can begin to break petroleum dependence. We will talk about individual, family, and community activities -- there is something for everyone.

This is the same workshop we held on January 11th. That time, participants came up with two new ideas: 1) to start gardens in schools; 2) to create a VERY local yellow pages (green pages). The first will get young people used to growing, and enjoying, their own food. Yes, it will probably take some time to implement; we'll have to get the school officials on board. But the second idea can begin very soon, and will certainly strengthen our local economy, as well as neighborhood relationships.
