There was a discussion of sharing of info on the e-mail lists. No disagreement on using the sfbayoil group as the umbrella for SF Oil Awareness - so all e-mail list members who aren't already on that group as well will be added to it; new members will be added to both SFOA and SF Bay Oil but the SF Bay Oil will be the primary communications group for us.
(Note: as of the writing of these notes, it has become apparent that yahoo does not allow very many people to be "added" to a group on any given day, so this process will take a little longer than anticipated unless we find a workaround. Presently almost every one has been grandfathered over, but since it is still in process this is being posted to both lists - sorry).
A discussion ensued regarding Post Carbon's use of scripting.
David F. reported on the SF Oil Awareness logo; a professional graphic artist is finalizing the design so that it can be used and scaled to cards, letterhead, etc.
Dennis discussed our previous business regarding a group Mission Statement; information was presented about the recent meeting of individuals involved in East Bay Peak Oil on this topic (the final document, pending approval of the east bay group, exists as a message at SFOA's yahoo group posted February 8, and on the SFBayOil message list). Discussion ensued that determined in addition to a formal mission statement the group could also use a “tag line” - shorter version of who we are, which would be of use in published materials, personal discussion, on business cards, etc.
If people have specific comments or suggestions about the tag line or the basic framework of the East Bay Peak Oil group, relative to how we could use it in San Francisco Oil Awareness, please post those comments on the SFOA group yahoo list. Also post suggestions for tag lines there; Davin volunteered to collect and organize them for the March meeting.
The Supervisors' Subcommittee reported on their progress during the course of the previous month. The subcommittee met with the Commission on the Environment, additionally gave a letter of concerns to the supervisors, and provided the commissioners and the supervisors with SF Post Carbon Oil Age posters. Cal Broomhead has volunteered to be very involved in our efforts. Presently the Supe Subcommittee is contacting individual supervisors and setting up meetings with them. Allyse has posted the present revised version of our “Request for Study” (on SFOA list) which has been written for the commissioners to the whole list. After some further review David F. will post the proposed Supervisors Resolution.
Davin and Tori suggested using power point presentations when meeting the supervisors. Other suggestions are welcome, please post them.
Lorin gave a presentation on wind energy and it’s potential use in a world with declining fossil fuels. Don and Wendy, who attended at Lorin’s invitation, were also valuable in their knowledge of wind and energy politics, especially those within California.
It had been planned that Sharon would also have a 15 minut presentation on tidal energy, but it was been postponed until the March meeting as we ran over time with our agenda.
Other future events at SFOA:
March 8 meeting: Alice Friedemann will give a presentation on milling of grain and the use of such foods, for health and for security (in times of potential food shortages).
Presentations with Undetermined dates:
David F. will present a 15 minute presentation on biofuels.
David F.’s friend, who is a native American of the Zuni tribe, will speak to SFOA regarding their sustainable practices.
Mike Carrick will give a presentation he has created on tar sands. This will be in the range of an hour.
Dennis and Jennifer will give a 15 minute presentation on “The Personal is the Political.” Preferably June or July.
Other items:
Tori asked for volunteers to work on a Bay conference with a sustainable vision, including peak oil groups, environmental groups, and government. She foresees it as having corporate sponsorship, including PG&E, Chevron, & BP.
Dennis agreed to contact Park & Recs SF about a May picnic for all the SF Bay Area groups.
Mike Carrick reported on a meeting the previous Saturday in Mountain View of Post Carbon outpost leadership.
Camilla reported on her trip to Venezuela attending the World Social Forum.
A number of months ago, Mike Carrick suggested that we have a group library. Dennis brought this topic up again, and Camilla volunteered to be group librarian. Our first resources added were 3 DVDs from Mike Carrick (media concerned with global warming). More will be added next month.
Next month’s volunteers:
Davin volunteered to be scribe (that pesky white board source was found?)
Michele volunteered to be note taker
Jennifer volunteered to be facilitator.
