ZeroCarbonCity is a global campaign to raise awareness about climate change and the energy challenges facing the world’s cities.
WHY ZEROCARBONCITY?
An increasing majority of the world’s population are living in cities. A significant part of climate change is affected by the actions of people in these cities. That is why we we're running a campaign that concentrates on the relationship between climate change and cities.
WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE?
Climate change is caused by gases that limit the heat radiated in to outer space, by creating a blanket of greenhouse gases (the greenhouse effect) in the Earth's atmosphere. This trapped heat then increases the Earth's temperature. Water vapour has some part in the greenhouse effect; however, it's the increase in carbon dioxide, methane, ozone and halocarbons that has been the greatest cause of climate change. All of these four gases have increased over the past 300 years as a direct result of human industry and population growth.
WHY WORK IN CITIES?
As major energy consumers of energy, cities occupy an important position in the climate change debate. They are centres of innovation, where action is most likely to happen. Cities also have great potential to make a difference; change in cities can have a siginificant effect on the global situation.
HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?
ZeroCarbonCity will visit over 60 countries around the world with a wide variety of interactive events, including city debates, a touring photography exhibition, workshops, school projects, and experiments. Visit our events and activities page for more details on what's happening near you. You can also join the online debate, featuring opinion from scientists, technologists, city planners and policy makers. West Leeds Country Park & Green Gateways Details - Environment Leeds, February 2006 New park 'will link green spaces' ... Residents in Leeds could soon be enjoying a new green space as the council aims to create a "linear country park" in the west of the city.
The new parkland would include guided walks and signposted key routes in the area which would link recreational areas and wildlife habitats.
The park aims to circle west Leeds by joining the Aire Valley corridor with Calverley, Pudsey, Armley and Wortley. Council leader Andrew Carter said it would enhance the area's appeal. Linking spaces Within the next two years it is expected that most of the groundwork will have been laid for people to begin using the park.
The park will be formed by preserving existing green spaces and linking them together. Mr Carter said: "It will provide a wealth of opportunities for leisure and enjoyment and also encourage activities which can boost health and well-being."
A large-scale consultation is under way with interested parties from more than 20 community groups, land managers and members of the public.
The city council said once the initial stages of the park scheme were complete the focus would shift to medium and long-term plans such as promoting horse riding, orienteering, cross-country running, walking, cycling and conservation work.
