The City of Sacramento unanimously and enthusiastically accepted the Sustainability Agenda proposed by staff members Gary Stonehouse and Keith Roberts at the City Council meeting on April 4. The Council also authorized Mayor Heather Fargo to sign the Urban Environmental Accords (UEA) on Earth Day. The Urban Environmental Accords are a set of guidelines developed by the City of San Francisco to honor the United Nations World Environment Day. Sacramento will join more than 88 other cities, worldwide, that are committing to a more sustainable future by signing the UEA. Learn more about the UEA at: http://www.citymayors.com/environment/environment_day.html
Council Member Ray Tretheway (District 1), proposed that the City create an "Office of Sustainability." (rtretheway@cityofsacramento.org 916-808-7001)
Last year, Mayor Fargo signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, which urges U.S. cities to meet or beat Kyoto Protocol targets by 2012.
