Model resolutions or legislation?

Perhaps we can compile model language for bills / resolutions for submission to local governmental bodies and agencies, or political parties. Many exist [San Francisco's renewable energy initiative comes to mind] but I have not been able to find a compilation to peruse. Anyone interested in helping on such an effort to bring some of these together in one resource?

Resolutions

Ben,
We are currently in discussion with other organizations in Central Ohio regarding the best way to get our local government started on evaluating our preparedness (which isn't good) for an energy constrained future. The first meeting didn't go that well, as they understand Peak Oil, but haven't spent much time researching what relocalization means. Did you read David Rooms article from Energy Preparedness about getting a resolution passed? I thought it was quite helpful and plan on taking it to the next meeting. If we get something going, I can send you a draft for your input.

Ben,
David Room's article on passing a Peak Oil Resolution can be located at    http://www.energybulletin.net/16131.html

He includes examples. It is a great resource.

Initiative is the answer!

Aloha Ben
I have registered over 3000 new Maui voter over the last 90 days in an effort to get two initiative, on this nov ballot!
Threw Initiative you need to get 8300 reg. voter to sign your petition! Then we can vote it into law! No one has ever used the Initiative in Maui before, but we can and are! We need to be able to grow our medical needs! Hemp should be part of the furture vison for Maui! Like to discuss this issues in depth!

Anyone still out there?

Hello, or rather Aloha, Is anyone still on this group. Seems like over a year has passed since the last forum/blog posting. Just found this site (relocalize) via Sustainable Bellingham, and am curious to what is going on in Maui (having just returned from my first ever visit). As a City Planner here in Bellingham, WA, while I tried to turn off my 'work brain' I still noticed the windfarm (hard NOT to notice it), but then started looking for other 'green' stuff. Not the jungle in Hana, but solar panels, narrower roads, bike lanes, good bus service, farmers markets, etc.

I've made contact with SLIM and hope to maintain contact there.

Mahalo.

On again; off again presence

Aloha Brian,

I guess I'm a little behind on this string!

Yes, I'm still here.

You are right - we have not been active for a while.

Another wind farm in the works, in Ulupalakua. Some solar gains. I've hit obstacles as I try to talk our community into putting panels up for our school. What we've got is a tiny start - a 1kw demo panel is going up on our school later this year. But I find that woefully inadequate and I've been trying to figure out how to up it to a reasonable size. It is funded by voluntary donations on utility bills - not much of a funding source. I'd like to see a large showcase project go in as a seed to new thinking. I pushed for solar water heaters for our pools, but so far the fellow who is in the county office is more interested in bio-generation and tapping the landfill for methane.

The utility is looking into the purchase of palm oil for generation, which scares the heck out of me. As far as I can tell, that's just making a problem worse somewhere else so we can keep consuming here. So at each community planning meeting I can get to I push to raise support for decentralized generation. People seem to like the idea when they hear about it.

Meanwhile, I do think we have a little interest in the community - enough to try to fire up the group again. So I'll see what I can make happen in the next couple of months.

Aloha,
Ben

Solar contact

Hey Ben, last week we had this guy give a presentation here at The Rock Pile (City Hall) about solar panels, usage, applicability and the like. You might want to give him a ring and maybe he can help with the 'convincing' for larger panels. Very straightforward guy, dry sense of humor, I learned a fair amount.

I like the idea of 'decentralized power generation', it's just taking the sustainability aspect another step further.

Do you happen to know of any 'movement' for land use planning and climate change/sea level rise? I found a few articles today about drought and climate change, and I've been wondering about the coastal areas and land development. Seems that the population of the US is migrating to the coasts, but there doesn't seem to be any consideration for sea level rise. Nicew new waterfront projects are going to become nice new underwater SCUBA parks and reef systems.

Just trying to think of areas/ideas for my masters thesis.
