Complementary Currency

I found a new type of system which seems to combine the best of all the systems we talked about, its called ROCS or robust complementary currency system
Check it out… http://www.transaction.net/money/rocs/ the whole site is great.

Here’s the link on the vid on how the software from timebanks.org works http://www.timebanks.org/swf/tour/weaver-demo.htm also a great site

I’ve contacted the developer of the software system featured in the movie last night, TimeKeeper – apparently it’s free – we could demo it and possibly trial it with a small group of volunteers.

Thoughts…?
Think Tank

Hi everyone,

Like we discussed last night at Helen’s we should focus on making firm commitments to our Think Tank movie choices in the future and get the advertising process down. So here are some of my thoughts on the matter. The goal should be to develop a process that uses the groups time effectively while producing good attendance at the screenings. There are a lot of electronic forms of advertising out there and it would maybe be best (least effort most results) if we consistently produced a standard package and emailed out to an advertisers distribution list.

The standard package might include the poster graphic, the movie graphic with think tank banner, a description of film/time/location, link to the trailer (maybe on our website)

Some ideas for a distribution list;
-Fernie fix (printed) - Deadline?
-Fernie fix (e-fix)
-Ourfernie.com
-Facebook network
-The ALL mailing list
-Fernie.com?
-Vogue theater markee (if we screen it there)
-The printers (for postering)
-ALL members

We could divvy up the roles;
-Arts Station chair setter upper/team
-Apres discussion facilitator
-Graphic design for poster and movie graphic
-Advertiser distribution list mailer person
-Movie selection and prescreening committee

I liked how last year we had the posters that grouped pre and post New Years movies together, it reduced the need to actually go out and do postering from like 6-8 to just 2.

Maybe in the future attendees could donate time hours to ALL for attending the screenings

Please add your thoughts or bring them to the next meeting.

Long live Think Tank Cinema!
Outraged at Canada's participation at the UN Climate Conference in Bali?

This is an ad running in Ottawa and Calgary papers put out by the Avaaz team (see below).
If you haven't signed this petition yet, there's still a few hours left - go to http://www.avaaz.org/en/another_canadian_climate_crime/9.php?cl=46187661

Here are some articles reporting on Canada's participation at the UN talks in Bali:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20071212.BALIMAIN12/TPS...
http://www.thestar.com/columnists/article/285171

Here is a message from Avaaz about the petition (Dec13/07):

Dear friends,

Wow - on Tuesday we aimed to get 25,000 Canadians to join the emergency call to Prime Minister Harper to stop blocking the crucial UN climate change talks in Bali - and we hit that target in just 18 hours!! In two days, 71,187 of us have signed the petition, and rising fast [it's now at 98, 607]- one of the largest online petitions in Canadian history!

The petition ads are running in papers tomorrow, including the Ottawa Citizen and the Calgary Sun. At the Bali summit, it is touch and go - with almost the entire world vs. Canada and the US over whether to accept targets on harmful carbon emissions. The draft agreement changes every hour, with carbon targets dropping in and out. We now have just over 24 hours left for an all-out push to get Harper to do the right thing. Let's ramp it up and hit 100,000 voices by Friday! If you haven't yet, please click below to sign up, see our ad, and then forward this email to everyone you know:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/another_canadian_climate_crime/9.php

Let's make sure that experts never again give Canada the "fossil" award for worst country in the world on climate change! If you've already told your friends and family about the petition, try calling Prime Minister Harper's office directly at 613 992 4211, or calling the House of Commons toll free on 1 (866) 599-4999 to talk to your MP about getting Parliament to act on this issue. Harper leads a minority government, he shouldn't be able to get away with ignoring the large majority of us who want real action on climate change.

Our incredible momentum is a wonderful and powerful statement about the Canada we all love and want to see - one that does the right thing in the world, whose flag stands for people and principles -- not the short term profits of big oil corporations. Let's forward this email round, blog this issue, talk about it at the dinner table and at work, and get an emergency people-powered movement going that reaches 100,000 by tomorrow!

With hope,

Ricken and the Avaaz team

---
Mayors to go it alone on Kyoto

Michelle Lalonde, CanWest News Service; Montreal Gazette

Published: Sunday, June 04, 2006

MONTREAL -- Canada's mayors will not let Prime Minister Steven Harper walk away from Canada's international commitments on climate change without a fight, and like their counterparts in the United States, Canada's mayors intend to work toward the goals of the Kyoto Protocol.

At its annual meeting in Montreal Saturday, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, representing 1,400 municipal leaders across Canada, adopted a policy statement supporting Canada's ratification of the Kyoto Protocol.

"Municipal governments commit themselves...to implementing policies and operational changes that will achieve a global reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 30 per cent by 2020 and 80 per cent by 2050, based on 1990 levels," the statement reads.

Those targets go beyond what Canada committed to in the Kyoto Protocol. The federal government has described the Kyoto targets as impossible to achieve.

Municipal governments can have a major impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Canada by changing land use rules, improving public transit, reducing methane-producing landfill waste, and other concrete measures, according to the FCM statement.

"In Canada, close to 55 per cent of the country's greenhouse gas emissions can be influenced by decisions made by municipal governments," the statement says.

Mayors in the U.S. have mounted an aggressive campaign against the anti-Kyoto stance of President George W. Bush and his administration.

As of May 26, 2006, 238 mayors representing over 45.4 million Americans had signed the U.S. Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement, pledging "to meet or exceed Kyoto Protocol targets for reducing global warming pollution by taking action in our own operations and communities."

Lloyd Hines, chair of the FCM's standing committee on environmental issues, said the FCM hopes to be consulted on Harper's climate change plan, promised for this fall. He said FCM members are concerned about the environmental message the Harper government has sent so far.

"They are concerned that there may be some lessening of commitment on Kyoto and other environmental issues," Hines said.

He stressed that the FCM is anxious to build a good relationship with the federal government and wants to be consulted as Harper works to define his so-called "Made in Canada solution" to the climate change issue.

Senior policy analyst Mary Jane Middlekoop said, who was asked by one delegate if the organization intends to "raise holy hell" over the issue, replied: "We intend to raise cool hell."

Montreal executive committee member Alan De Sousa said the FCM has to walk a fine line between maintaining good relations with the federal government and advancing its own environmental policies. But he said FCM members are staunchly committed to fighting climate change with concrete action.

"Fundamentally no one (at the municipal level) is dancing around this issue. (The mayors) have seen the impacts (of climate change) in their communities. They don't have to be convinced."

Environment Minister Rona Ambrose was to address the FCM's meeting today but has cancelled, citing a schedule conflict.

Today, Parti Quebecois Leader Andre Boisclair and Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe are expected to launch a Save-Kyoto coalition at a news conference in Old Montreal.

And Monday is World Environment Day, designated by the United Nation's in 1972 as a vehicle to "stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and action" and commemorated each year on June 5.

Montreal Gazette http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/info/contactus.html

Post Carbon Ponoka

Neighbourhood Gardens

From another discussion about a food exchange the idea of having a neighbourhood garden program came up.

Here's a link

http://neighbourgardens.affinitybridge.com

The concept as I understand is matching people with gardening land with people without. Great idea.

If any one is interested feel free to discuss it here.

Advocates for Local Living - ALL (Fernie, B.C.)

fresh food exchange

I know that my garden is going to produce more than I can use this year and I was thinking of starting some kind of garden exchange where people can bring things from their garden to trade with other people. It would give people a chance to try different veggies and to trade gardening stories and tips. The idea is still pretty loose, so any suggestions that anyone has would be totaly welcome!

Advocates for Local Living - ALL (Fernie, B.C.)

ARGENTINA: Urban Gardens Provide More than Just Food

BUENOS AIRES, Feb 9 (IPS) - The community gardens initially created to help confront the effects of the late 2001 economic collapse in Argentina have now "grown" into a government-run urban agriculture programme, which provides unemployed workers with much more than just food for their families' tables.

Some 7,000 people who were out of work before entering the programme have joined forces to clear the land, plant and harvest vegetables, and sell their produce in street market stalls.

Alliance for a Post Petroleum Local Economy - APPLE Shasta
