Here in Chatham, Ontario we are both fortunate and unfortunate. Let me explain. An ethanol plant was started up on the edge of town and we put up with the bad smells and such because we thought the local farmers would be the ones to supply the plant with local corn. It turned out that the plant bought corn that was cheaper from the states because it was heavily subsidized and they did not care how much extra fuel it cost and the air polution it caused to ship it here, because the bottom line said their input costs where lower. SHAME,SHAME,SHAME. A tax was imposed on the incoming corn to make it cheaper to get it from the locals. The plant was crying the blues, but it is their own greed that set them up for that fall. We are also lucky to be in between two major bodys of water, so we have a constant airflow which would be perfect for wind generation, Right? Wrong. The local and regional will is not in place to fund such undertakings. They are more interested in funding studies on pig manure digesters because we are have a major problem with weed growth in the Bay. We have so much potential that is simply wasted. I can not put up a wind generator on my property because there is too many tall trees around that would block my efforts; the best I can do is put up some solar panels. Somebody has to start!
