Press Release for the Future of Food event on May 20th

Body:

Here is the press release that goes with the Saratoga Film Forum's presentation of The Future of Food this coming Saturday:

Press Release
5/15/06

A preview of how the local and natural food community can network together will be presented live at Saratoga Film Forum Sat night, May 20th.

This local theatre is screening The Future of Food, the grassroots favorite which everyone is talking about, and two local natural food establishments, Four Seasons and Honest Weight Food Coop, are donating a menu that is as non-genetically engineered and local as possible, on cutlery and dinnerware that is bio-degradable. Local baker Adam Witt is donating bread.

Following the meal and screening, panelists representing the nearby farm and food community, and also Skidmore, will be on hand for Q&A. They include Billie Best of Regional Farm and Food Project, Steve Gilman of Northeast Organic Farming Association, and Skidmore professor Dale Willman. Louise Johnson of the Safe Food Committee of HWFC will be there to answer questions about legislative action involving our local elected officials and the regulation of GE/GM food.

A professor from RPI recently told an audience that this beautiful and provocative film has more subject matter that he could cover in his semester biology course, so there is sure to be much “food for thought, and the event is being promoted at both Troy and Saratoga Springs Farmers Markets.

The effort to provide a GMO-free menu at this gathering is tricky since over 70% of the food on supermarket shelves contains some GM ingredients. But on this evening, the soy and corn, whether tofu, cooking oils, flour, or lecithin, will be non-GM, and the organic lemonade and the sodas will use white grape juice instead of GM corn syrup as sweetener.

To reserve space for this 7pm meal, then movie and forum, call 584-FILM. The theatre is at 320 Broadway. Tickets are $8.00 to cover some of the event’s costs.

To leave no local resident out, Saratoga Springs Library is also showing this film, minus the dinner and the panelists, on Thurs, June 8th at 6:30, sponsored by Spa City Coop. This event is free.
