I'm in the process of reading "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life" by Barbara Kingsolver, in which she, along with her husband, Steve Hopp, and daughter Camille describe their experience of eating (nearly) exclusively local food for an entire year.

The book is organized by topics but follows pretty much the chronology of their excursion into the food supplies found in their gardens, their neighbors gardens, and the various places where they travel (including Canada, Ohio, Pennsylvania).

Her style of writing is uplifting and celebratory, with a bit of sarcasm and a pinch of cynicism. It is a great companion to Bill McKibben's "Deep Economy."

Camille includes recipes at the end of most chapters, and I've learned to make Mozzarella Cheese from her! I now make my own very local mozzarella using Meadowbrook milk (just southwest of Albany), citric acid (OK, not so local), and vegetarian rennet. It takes about an hour (less if you use a microwave), and can be eaten directly thereafter or chilled for later. I had it on my tomatoes, and topped it with my basil, drizzled with olive oil (OK, OK!! Not local!), and pepper (I know: not local). I figure it costs me about $2.75 in materials (half-gallon of milk and traces of the citric acid and rennet). This compares to the $4.50 for the same amount of cheese made from non-organic (and probably rBGH-infused) milk from some huge dairy conglomerate and wrapped in plastic. Next, I want to try cream cheese (or Neufchatel), creme fraiche, and some aged hard cheese (like cheddar). Then on to blues.

I don't eat much dairy now, but I'm intrigued by the process of preserving food and cheese foots the bill there.

Anyone else reading the book or have cheese-making experiences to share?

I watched CNN Presents last nite because I just love their "news" reporting. NOT!!!

I watched because they aired an hour piece (of what, I'll let you decide) on a scenario whereby the combination of a Category 5 hurricane and a terrorist attack on the Abqaiq oil processing facility in Saudi Arabia brings the world to its collective knees some 40 months from now.

At the behest of another Peak Oil group in the area (Hudson-Mohawk Socio-Economic Collaborative), I wrote a critique of the show as feedback for CNN. Here it is:

Anyone with experience with Bokashi/Effective Micro-organisms?

As a backyard organic gardener (about 40 sq meters), I found an article on Bokashi use in Nova Scotia quite interesting. I have a compost box here in Saratoga Springs, New York, but the breakdown of organic matter is quite slow. I'm not using worms or strictly adhering to the addition of green/brown matter. Is anyone familiar with Bokashi and its effectiveness in reducing composting times?

Hybrids to be hurt by new EPA dual-standard

The EPA will require car manufacturers to more correctly estimate the fuel economy of their cars starting with the 2008 models. The 2008 cars will see their "window sticker" estimated mpgs go down by up to 25% and probably more for highway driving with hybrids, thus making hybrids look less attractive to potential buyers. But, at the same time the CAFE standards and the methods used to determine the efficiency numbers the auto industry reports to the EPA to avoid fines (for inefficiency) will remain unchanged! Talk about a double standard. Who seems to be in bed with whom here?

Which Boulder Valley?

As a former resident of 13 years in the heart of the People's Republic of Boulder (Colorado), I know it seems hard to believe that there could be another Boulder Valley out there (in US or Canada). In fact, there's a lovely town in the middle of the Henry Mountains of Utah called "Boulder" and I'm sure they have a valley too. Then there's Boulder City, Nevada; not sure if there's a valley there...

In fact the two "Boulder Valley" entries in the USGS Geographic Names Information System refer to one in Montana and another in Nevada.

I had to dig into one of the blogs to find a reference to KGNU (yea!) to realize this is Boulder Valley, CO.

Into the car. Accelerate onto the freeway. Burn those hydrocarbons. Running on empty. Take the long way home to stop at the cheap gas station. Blast over the lake, concrete floating on water, dripping oil, antifreeze, rubber. Crest the hill, there's downtown, the stadium, the Space Needle, steel giants glowing in the cool night air. Exit right.

At the corner of James and 12th is the Shell station. One block down at Jefferson is Arco. Whose gas is cheaper today? My debit card is expired, and cash is running low. So let's put it on plastic. Wait, Arco doesn't take credit. Cash only, baby. No prices on the glowing yellow Shell sign. That's odd. Pull into the station. The pumps are off. White sheets of paper taped to every pump read:
