Greetings, All.
First, my apologies for not being as pro-active as I would have
liked over the past several months. I've been planning a wedding
and doing construction/repairs. Well, the wedding was last Saturday
and I'm seeing daylight at the end of my construction nightmare
tunnel.
However, along with my right-hand partner, Susan Oldland, what extra energy
and time I've had have been going into the Peak Oil
Symposium that will bring Sacramento's activist community together
to discuss how what we (all) are doing relates to Peak Oil and how
we can work more effectively together to achieve the synergy
necessary to create meaningful change.
If you are interested in participating in the coordination of the Symposium, please contact Susan directly at: tenpinktoes@earthlink.net.
Meanwhile, there are several activities I'd like to have our members
working on--but haven't had the time even to organize a General
Meeting! Therefore, I'm making an appeal: if you are interested in
one of the following ideas or have an idea for another working group
or project, please take this opportunity to step up to the plate.
You are not alone! We are available for consultation and the Post
Carbon Institute has numerous "scripts" (step-by-step plans of
action) for getting a project from conception to fruition.
Here are a couple of projects of a timely nature that I'd like to
see taken up by our members:
SUSTAINABLE EXCHANGE (aka Rummage Sale) FUNDRAISER
SPAN needs $$$ to cover printing costs, which can really add up--and
to get online with a real website (our page on the Post Carbon
Institute site has its uses, but is limited in capacity. And there
are always incidentals. So far, what's been spent has all come from
the same source... and my pockets are not deep.
WHAT'S NEEDED:
Coordinator
Solicitors of donations (person-to-person, Craig's List, etc.)
Donations
Collectors of donations
Staff for day of sale (set up, sales, cashier, tear-down)
Good location for a sale
Place to store stuff (preferably on site of sale)
I'd like to see this become an annual event!
The weather is right now and for the next three months.
I have lots of experience with rummage sales and can advise!
Anybody?
TABLE/FLYER "AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH"
Al Gore's movie is rumored to have people leaving the theatre in a
mood to do something. Wouldn't it be great if we could capture that
interest and direct their energies to SPAN projects? The answers to
Peak Oil and Global Warming are the same: we need to start living
sustainably!
WHAT'S NEEDED:
Coordinator (make arrangements with theaters, schedule volunteers)
Someone to design more effective flyers.
Volunteers to make and deliver copies.
Volunteers to staff the tables, distribute flyers and talk to people
about Peak Oil and SPAN.
GRAPHIC DESIGNER/MEDIA EXPERT
SPAN needs a logo! Pat and I have developed a logo, but we could
use a pro to give it a finished look and develop others for the
group to evaluate and vote on.
Anyone with experience writing press releases and/or informational
brochures, flyers etc., can help us get the word out more
effectively.
Thanks for considering stepping up your commitment to SPAN and our
post-carbon survival strategies! **Denise**
