Hi everyone,
I'm writing on behalf of a postcarbon group in London, Ontario (http://freedom.2y.net/wiki/Post-Carbon_London)
to ask for some advice.
We're trying to organize a September forum out here to raise awareness about peak oil, and we're looking for speakers who will volunteer their time (as we won't be able to pay them). Do you have any suggestions?
We are in need of at least one speaker who can address peak oil in terms of the geological, economic (e.g. inflation in the short-term), and technological (e.g. hydrogen is far off) issues -- preferably with expertise. In short, we need one or more people to describe exactly what peak oil is -- as authoritatively as possible.
After summarizing peak oil, we plan to begin exploring solutions. We've talked about finding presenters who can discuss agriculture, transportation, municipal activism, and the economics of alternatives to fossil fuels. It seems that we may have found people who can speak about agriculture issues, but no one has been contacted yet).
Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated!

You may want to try Barry Silverthorn. He produced the End of Suburbia and if you make the documentary part of your forum, I think he could be persuaded to attend. As far as finding someone to address the geology, have you tried the universities in the area? I know Waterloo has an environmental sciences department and non-profit agency, I would think Western does too. Also in that vein, try the engineering department to talk about it. I just read an article by a civil engineering prof at UBC about coal not being a solution to peak oil, surely someone there has an opinion on the viability of hydrogen.
I will be talking with perhaps Ontario's only permaculture teacher in 3 weeks in Orangeville, his name is Richard Griffith and last I heard he was in Elgin but that may have changed given we're going to be visiting his farm and Elgin is no where near Orangeville! One of the members of the Chatham group is a prof at Western (she lives in Chatham), I will ask her what her thoughts are on people to possibly approach on that campus.
Drop me a note anytime you need some help, after that conference in NYC in May I managed to network a lot of contacts.
